I was never around then, but i've heard the world was safer and the men were different. I watch those movies set in the 50's and men were actually courting women with the best of intentions. ( im sure there were still the occasional bad seeds) They wanted to get married and start families. They took women on dates, besides bars with their buddies, and kissed then goodnight without trying to get an invitation inside. I wish i was there then. Somehow...things just seemed simpler.

OK,, now this I have got to respond to. Just the facts..not being rude. So please, please picture me clutching onto my stomach and laughing hard as I type this.

>>It is to them that I owe the PEACE I enjoy today ?

You bet.

>> What peace are we speaking of here because I see none.

Of course you don't. You were born after the war (WW II ) and most people, especially Gen Y, have no concept of it. To them WW-II may well have been waged in the 1300 s.

>> I still see racism, sexism, poverty, war, death, and disease.

Very very very deep sigh. Not your fault at all, believe me. It's the NES.

Where do you see racism today? Really, where ? Was it there in the 50s ? Absolutely. But today ? Race is a business for certain activists -- (Sharpton, Jackson et al) who have a monetary stake in keeping alive the idea that there is racism in the mainstream. There is NONE. Sure there are individual oddballs in society or some fringe groups, but they will always remain.

>>Sexism

Sexism ? Give me a break. The world's richest woman is a self made black billionaire. Until a few months ago, America's most powerful (female) politician was a black woman. A major mainstream Presidential candidate is black. Enough said.

>> Poverty

Read the Heritage Foundation's report on Poverty. A certain poster on this forum couldn't argue factually, so she laughed it off. But here it is again :

(Understanding Poverty In America) http://www.heritage.org/Research/Welfare/bg1713.cfm

>> War

Do you feel the effects of war like our grandparents and great grandparents did back in the 30s and 40s. Life continues normally with daily coverage of Paris, Britney and Lindsay. But the war you are talking about is a whole different subject, so I will leave it at that.

>>Disease

Disease ?? Half a century ago people used to die of simple diseases like malaria and cholera. A decade ago AIDS was a death sentence. Today with proper medication you can continue to live indefinitely. What disease are you talking about. Even most forms of cancer are treatable if caught early and those that are not can still give many years of life.

Do not believe the #$%^ that is taught in public schools and colleges. The whole education system is agenda driven, designed to show you and make you believe how awful and unjust our country is and how miserable people are. And that the cure is more socialism, higher taxes, more govt control and more people dependent on govt.

Let's not discuss this topic any further on this board or else the CLs will come after us. There is a politics section where you can ask questions or post comments.

>>I'm an obsessive reader.

You are also a very beautiful woman. ( Ok I had to throw that one in)

>>I respect what they had to endure but I cannot thank them for peace because we have none of that.

But you must. You can thank them for the fact that the world doesn't speak German or pledge their allegiance to a Fuhrer. Also a 100 years from now a new generation of people will be thanking our current President.

So i'm thinking i will NEVER bring this topic to the board again. Something so simple and light hearted turned into a giant debacle.

I think some people just need to be reminded (again) that this is NOT a debate board.
