I had an excellent weekend:

Friday night, I had dinner out with family. Then I went to my brother's and shot some basketball.

Saturday, I met two friends downtown and we painted pottery. Afterwards, we had lunch and perused some of the local shops.

Today, I went to my 8 year old nieces birthday party at a science museum. I had SO much fun! My sister had her hands full! She had 20 kids to show up. I climbed, slid down slides, rode a flight simulator, basically, I got to be a kid today!

The best part is, after the party, I took my two nieces to dinner downtown. The weather was ideal so, we ate outside on the patio then walked around town for a little while.

-- Did you guys enjoy your weekend? What did everyone get into?

Well, congrats on winning! Thanks for elaborating. I have a terrible memory!

I thought there was a lot of money to be made in the horse world. Go figure. Maybe that is just breeding or, maybe it's an altogether false perception ; )

No - very few people really make a lot of money in the horse industry.

Breeding? By the time that baby hits the ground, you have about $10K invested.

The overhead in the horse business is incredible. So while the customers may have beaucoup bucks - rarely is it the trainers with that money.

If anyone ever tries to sell you a horse as an investment - run as fast as you can. Very rarely do you come out in the black. It's very much a rich man's hobby. I think the only deal I ever actually made a decent profit on was a pony I picked up at an auction for $50 and flipped a few months later for 25K.

$25 K is not a bad profit but I am guessing that it is a rarity, from reading the rest of your post.

Yeah, that's a once in a lifetime deal. And of course, it was slightly less than $25K profit - there were training, board and showing fees for the time I owned her.

If I had a spare $30 K sitting around, there's a pony in Maryland I'd buy because I'm willing to bet I could flip him for $100 K in two years.

One of my nieces is completely enamored with horses. I don't think she realizes the cost invlolved with owning one, though. I have tried to explain but it's difficult where money is involved. At the age of ten, they still think it grows on trees ; )

She and her sister will be taking riding lessons for the first time this summer. I am ecstatic for them!

That's awesome!

I think all kids should be exposed to horses at some point.

In fact, one of my heroes, Kathy Kusner, started a program called Horses in the Hood that takes kids from Watts and sends them to horse camp.

There's something very special about the horse/human connection that's not found with other species.

Our agency does equine therapy with juvenile delinquents. I dont engage in the therapy myself because Im not certified but as an observer, its amazing to watch. Part of it is that most of the horses they work with have been abandoned, badly mistreated or abused as well, just like some our kids.

There's a mental hospital in the town I live in, and part of the campus of the hospital includes a horse farm, and I'm pretty sure my friend told me they do equine therapy there, too.
