Well I will look to see how clean the place is. If it is spotless, I will be impressed. Not that I think all guys are dirty, but whether they cared enough about my opinion actually counts. I like good style too, but won't judge a man harshly if they lack in that area. That can all be changed later (j/k) :)
Personally I look at stuff like his books, DVDs, CD collections - stuff like that.
I DO NOT pay attention on whether the place is clean or not. Of course it's clean. The guy wants to make a good first impression. His cleanliness habits only come out after I've been with him for a long period. So if I'm over there for the first few times, it's always going to be clean.
I would personally run if a man has perfumed vegetarian candles and lots of girly stuff lying around. I probably wouldn't want to see too much clutter.
I will usually be scared if a guy's place is spotless. That generally means that he's a control freak (or at least anal-retentive). I'd actually prefer a place that's kind of messy. But I've never been what you'd call a neat freak. I'd like a guy to be a a bit less messy than I am. I'm more likely to pick up a little more often, than if I were stuck with someone on my case about it ALL THE TIME.
I agree. I look for generally clean... nothing growing in the bathroom or fridge. Things tidy, but actually looks like he lives there. I also like to brouse through book collections and music collections.
I've had two bad "first time to his house" experiences: 1--he called a half hour before I was to come over to ask for additional time because he was still cleaning up... hmmmm. 2--he didn't even do the "1st time tidying", but just left a year's worth of dust on everything and the things growing in the shower..... eeewwwwww.
I like a man's place to be pretty clean. I don't mind some clutter just as long as I'm not swimming in the clutter since I tend to leave things here and there but I don't like grimy bathrooms or kitchens. I like the counter tops, sinks, etc etc to be pretty clean, doesnt' need to be spotless but needs to look like he made some sort of an effort to clean them. I also like good taste in furniture or pictures on the wall. A place that looks like he made an effort to make it look like home and give it some character instead of the bachelor pad with posters or white walls and furniture that is ancient. Too clean is not a good thing either because I'm not too clean and I probably wouldn't fare well with a neat freak.

I look for things that will tell me more about him.
Good:
Clean
No roommates
Family photos
Lots of books
Bad:
Dirty
Photos of bikini clad women straddling motorcycles
No books but copies of Mens Health and International Male strewn around
