From internet to first date

Thanks for those of you who responded to my "Purposefully being approachable?" post. Your thoughts really helped me embrace my current feelings on dating.
I'm warming up to the dating/relationship idea slowly. Although I HATE the online dating thing, it seems to be the way these days. I'm very comfortable with the email communication and what not but have trouble making the leap to first date. My nerves get to me and usually I don't want to even commit to a date. These feelings will cause me to completely back out unless I'm incredibly intrigued by someone.
How do I get myself to set the date and then actually follow through? And how do I minimize my 'nerves'?
Also...how do you handle it if you've been briefly communicating online, exchange pictures and then find that you're not attracted to someone? You don't want to be obvious as to way but you want to at least be somewhat attracted to someone right?
Thanks for the help!

Settling the nerves takes experience and time.
