I've noticed a lot of new faces so I thought I'd do an "intro" post.

Where do you volunteer, if you don't mind sharing? (What kind of organization?)

I'm looking for a volunteer opportunity, and I can't seem to settle on what kind of volunteer work I want to do - so I'd love an inside perspective.

Thanks for asking, tallgirl. I volunteer as a literacy tutor to a 25 year old woman. She and I have been meeting twice a week for a little over 2 years. It's a pretty big commitment but very rewarding. :)

Once she feels that she is ready to move on and not meet with me anymore, I will still try to find other ways to volunteer but in ways that aren't so time-consuming. For instance, I can still volunteer with the literacy organization but not as a tutor. I could be one of the people who administers the assessment tests to incoming students to see where their reading levels are currently. I could also do other kinds of work in the literacy office, I believe.

If I decide to not stay with the organization, I'm thinking of maybe checking out the Humane Society. Of course, I imagine that can be very sad because not all of the animals will find good homes and such. :( I've also thought of maybe trying to find a way to help the elderly with things like running errands or taking them to appointments. Oh! And I've seen signs in my library about needing volunteers to take library materials to patrons who are homebound. I thought that sounded nice but I might be a bit nervous about going to strangers' homes.

I'm sure there are also opportunities out there to help children (like Big Brothers/Big Sisters) but I, personally, am not really interested in those. I feel that so many people focus on things "for the children" that others (like the elderly) get overlooked and I'd like to try to help them out instead.

I have two lonely, widowed grandmothers who are mostly blind and housebound, so I definitely agree that the elderly need the attention. Good point!

I actually tried to be a literacy tutor several years ago, and I was 10 years younger than the woman they matched me with and we had drastically different backgrounds and lifestyles. I wanted to make it work, but I don't think she ever felt comfortable with me. It is a MUCH harder job than it sounds, and I admire you for doing that.

Thanks for sharing with me.

Hello!
My name is Dionne and I'm 28 years old.

Location: DFW, TX (just moved here for grad school/career)

How long have you been single?
Well, I was in a relationship from nov2003-march2005 with a guy. then spent from april-sept single, dated here and there but couldnt get involved b/c my X was still on my mind..although I did manage to forget about him for a couple months in the summer. THEN I started talking to him again and we dated exclusively from sept-dec. I moved here over christmas from atlanta. we broke up after trying long distance for a couple weeks. that final dating stint with him seemed promising but his true colors showed thru. i was giving him another chance but he really really is NOT the guy for me to put it nicely :-) I've been single for a couple months and joined eharmony. I havent gone out with anyone yet mainly b/c I'm trying to get settled here in Dallas. There's a guy Im talking to from eharmony. We clicked instantly on the phone. He's really great, just about everything I'm looking for (without having met him in person ...hahah). I'm excited to meet him in person but I'm spending this week at the gym before I accept a date with him.

What do I do in my free time? What free time? :-) I exercise, read, watch movies, go out with friends and family, play with my dog, volunteer at a sort of halfway house for kids who are possibly transitioning to a foster home. honestly i dont have much free time right now though!

Great idea!

I am 30 and have been dating Craig for over a year, but the past half year has been long-distance, so we are no longer exclusive until the distance ends (this fall! and then we will either be exclusive again), but we remain in daily contact in the meantime. Although it was my idea to end the exclusivity, I have not really dated anyone here. But the time apart has allowed me to focus on my friendships which are more important to me with every passing year!

I love to travel, read, take long walks, go to shows, and basically try anything new!

Name & age (if you want to disclose it): Bob 37 (I am told I look like I'm 28. - That's good, right?)

Location: Currently living at a one room schoolhouse 30 miles outside of Gordon, Nebraska

How long have you been single? Four years since last serious LTR, one and half years since last somewhat serious LTR.

Are you currently trying to date or are you doing the "just be single thing" for a while? I live on the open prairie so I am sorta forced to do the single thing. Why, do you know someone in my area???

If you're dating, how's it going? The area cattle are starting to look good.

What are some things you like to do in your free time? I love to travel. (Visited 49 states and lived in 6 of them.) I also love the outdoors - hiking, backpacking. I also like to sketch and paint watercolors when the mood strikes me.
