Job search - help
| Fri, 10-12-2007 - 11:42am |
I am in the middle of a job search, and I need some new ideas. I am mid career, looking for a definite step up and a place to grow (and more money/better benefits). For me, that likely means a larger company. (I am in corporate communications - editorial/writing focus right now).
I have been scanning the job boards, Craigs List, trying to go to newtworking events when possible, meeting past colleagues for drinks to ask advice/leads, etc.
What else can I do? How did you all find your current job -- job posting, word of mouth, knew someone at the company? (I know it's a different process for the teachers on the board).

Three words for you. Monster, Monster, Monster. Secondly, everyone wants more money. Being a corporate employee you will see only incremental gains and your salary and position will taper off at some point, ie unless you can make it to upper management. Think outside the box. For example, you could start your own website/blog and pull in supplemental income through Google AdSense. Lots of people are doing it and it can bring in anywhere from a few hundred to tens of thousands and even hundreds of thousands or (gasp) millions !

I found my job through the USA Jobs site. I think it's usajobs.opm.gov.

Govt. is ALWAYS a bad idea. It should be the last place someone should look to for employment.
Oh well never mind. I will restrain myself before I launch.
I'm in the same field. Have you tried prsa.org, or journalismjobs.com (there's a PR section there). That's where I've found most of my jobs. If you've been doing this for a few years you could probably find a job at a PR firm with great benefits. A lot of them are hiring from what I can tell. You may have to move if you want to go that route, but who knows, some of the larger ones might have an office in your city.
When people ask you why you want to leave, just say you're looking for a different challenge and more room for growth. Keep it short and sweet. Always works.
Most people outside of the DC area don't realize there are a lot of govt jobs out there in a ton of different career fields.
It's so impressive than anyone could do a job like that.
I've worked at two PR firms. Never again. :)
My first two jobs I found through the local PRSA chapter, but I haven't checked out journalismjobs.com in a long time. Thanks for the reminder on that one!
