Hi I just moved to TN from LA, CA and yes, I am making a bit less but not much AND the cost of living is SO MUCH cheaper. My SO is in sales (insurance) and I am in the Education admin field (was in museum ed before, but haven't found too many museums here).

I'm in Knoxville and I really like it so far, I've lived a few different areas throughout VA though and it's not all that different than some parts of VA.

I don't know too much about the lawnmower aspect. However, if you are bilingual that is a big plus as there aren't too many bilingual people around so they do pay you more for this skill whereas in LA you just don't get the job if you're not bilingual.

I know a lot of people who make big money in real estate (the market around here is pretty good compared to other places) and also if you have your own construction type business that would go very well.

Not a word of Spanish, . . and I live in Miami. (-: I mange in sales no less in a market like this with a smile and a good attitude . . .I should be in heaven in Knoxville. (-: I keep considering Knoxville . . not so much fro a "practical" reason although it has been listed right up there as a great place to live . . . . . but because when I was a kid I had family there and just have a "kids" memory of how much I enjoyed the place.

I am glad to hear things in the market are somewhat stable. In my "field" I have seen two of the best, most successful, most well established sales people I know canned because they could not produce the 30% growth in 07 in a market that is down 30% to 60%.

So glad to hear you say this, as it was a big motivation for our move. We would like to purchase a house and start and family and I could not see doing this in LA (nor could I afford it!).

I'm glad I found this post. I, too, I'm thinking seriously for moving out of CA. Where I live there are no jobs and the ones that are in exsistant are taken by illegals. The employers here like illegals because they do not have to claim them or pay them a decent salary. But us Americans are left out. CA is getting worse all the time. Also, you cannot buy a or rent anything that is reasonable. OK...I'm off my soap box.

So, get an information package from the city in the state you are thinking of moving to and do the homework. Read their newspaper. Go to the census.gov site and look at what is going on in that state.

So good luck to everyone.

Sounds nice, but I'm not jealous. I grew up in the NorthEast and I was missing the Fall.
