Do you ever feel like you're just passing the time until....well, until you die?

Yeah I used to feel like that too. Several years ago. Frankly, though, I really wasn't doing anything with my life at all. So it felt like I was doing nothing more than marking time. Just doing things to pass the time until I met with the Grim Reaper.
I do feel like I have a purpose now. Well - at least I feel like my purpose is in sight. I'm looking into doing some volunteer work with either the Indian Health Services in the lower 48 states or maybe the Alaska Native reservations later in the year. Maybe a job with them as well after I graduate. Maybe. Alaska is cold. But the pay is pretty darn good! And I would only be there for two years. I hear the Northern Lights are fantastic.
I never thought of it that way before . . . I do feel like I could be doing more with my life but I don't think about my own mortality very often, just my parents.
My, aren't we feeling philosophical ; )
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this Shy. We do not know when we leave this Earth. I believe in living a conscious life, i.e. not go through the motions and not really thinking on how we are spending our precious time and energy here. I believe that we all have a purpose here and an obligation on making a difference in whatever way we can. I like the Mother Teresa quote, "We can do no great things, only small things with great love."
I have children and that highlights living a conscious life with purpose, integrity, joy and love for me.

I have felt that way many times. Usually it's when I go through a period when I have very little to do which usually gives me more time than I know what to do with and I end up thinking about thigns way too much and I end up wondering if I am wasting my life. I think everyone goes through this at various points in their life.
I can honestly say though that since you're a teacher, you are making a difference in children's lives but maybe during the summer you could find something to do with your time in the community or go out more or spend more time doing a hobby that you rarely get time to spend on, or anything really whatever you want to do that makes you happy.
I must say though(as a college student graduating in May) I am jealous of you since you get summers off for the rest of your life because of your profession.
I don't have too much time on my hands right now, but I still feel that way.
Another thing I know about teachers, at least in Massachusetts (because the cost of living here is so high), many of them work other jobs in the summer to make extra money, because a lot of teachers, especially young ones who are just starting out, do not make a lot. I know there were several teachers in my school system "back in the day" who had "summer jobs."
I think about that every summer, but I just can't bring myself to train for a job that I'll quit in two months.
