I figured out the problem with the first dress! The yoke was what I kept having trouble with, so I pulled the actual pattern back out and the yoke pattern is definitely made wrong. It's a multi-sized pattern, and I had to cut all of the pieces to size except that one. It's not marked for any size, so of course it won't fit the smallest one. Of course the dots won't match! Of course the shoulders won't match! I'm rather irritated that now to make it right, I'm going to have to resize it myself and take most of it apart, but at least I know the problem now...and it wasn't me!

I thought I had it on the longest stitch, but maybe I didn't.

You're supposed to use a large stitch when you do gathering--if it's too small and tight it won't move.

It's Simplicity, and it's supposed to be an "easy" one! I think I know one mistake I made, but that wouldn't make things not fit together. Since I have so much extra fabric, I might try to take that part apart and redo it. If I have the motivation, that is! I started working on another one today. The smallest the pattern goes is a 3, so it'll be awhile until it fits, but it is much better written and easier. It's almost like the person who wrote the first one didn't have a good grasp of English or something. I have hit a roadblock on the second one. I got to the point where I'm supposed to gather the ruffle and the thread won't move more than a centimeter or so. I've never done any gathering before, so I'm not sure how it's supposed to work. I ran out of thread so I decided that was a sign to go to bed anyway since it's midnight. I'll google it in the morning and see if I can find a video that shows me what I'm doing wrong. Once I get that done, it's going to be a super-cute dress! Even the sleeves didn't give me trouble.

One more day of sleeping in before I go back. Ugh. Maybe that's what's depressing me!

That's odd--I remember I used to get patterns from the usual companies, if I recall it was Simplicity and another company, but I remember my mother (who taught me how to sew) saying that Vogue patterns were really hard, so maybe it was the company.

I don't think it was that I was tired. The back piece didn't match the front at the shoulders, and the piece that goes underneath that you fuse the innerfacing to only matched the yoke at the shoulders, not the back where it was supposed to lay. On top of that, two different pieces were referred to as the same and it called for almost twice the material that I really needed. It was like no one actually used the pattern before they mass produced it. I would say it was me if I was off by a little bit, but the amount I was off by was about a whole pattern piece (the front) so it was like someone just forgot about it.

I might attempt it again, just to see. But not for awhile!

I also used to find if I ever did sew at night when I was tired I'd make a lot more mistakes.

I don't know if I'll attempt the coat after this dress disaster. Everything is fine except the neckline. I really think the pattern was wrong because there is no way I could have made as big of mistake as it looks! I've gone rogue on the directions at this point. They don't make sense, and there are obviously parts missing. I have bias tape (another first time adventure) and the hem to do and I'm done with it. I'm just too frustrated at this point!

You're very brave to do a coat! I made a suit jacket for a child once and he wore it...once.
