That's just another phase to get through, IMO. It's always a little freaky to meet the friends - he might just need to do it in a place that's super comfortable for him. Maybe it was more about the details of the evenings plans than meeting your friends. Just try again. Maybe even just a dinner with a smaller group. Or a movie - something totally low key where he doesn't feel on display.
I doubt his friends disliked you. See? We all get a little nervous when we meet the new SO's friends.

He was invited to a party that night too and we ended up sitting around watching bad tv like an old married couple.
In the long run, if you guys work out, the friends thing will work out as well. They're not dating you, and your friends aren't dating him, so who cares? The only exception I have to that rule is if my friends are telling me they see some serious red flags - then I take their opinion into consideration. If it's over something stupid, like he's not good looking enough, then I blow off their opinion if I really like the guy.
Once his friends get to know you, I'm sure they'll love you. :)
