Maybe it's just me, but does anyone else get creeped out when someone knocks on your door unexpectedly?  It's happened twice tonight. I never answer unless I'm expecting someone. I don't have a window to look out, and it's dark so the peep-hole is useless.  I'm just not sure I feel safe opening the door to a stranger, not knowing who it is. It could be my neighbor, but I don't want to take that chance!

If I have a light on outside I may look.  Otherwise a .40 pistol in hand works

It's not just you. You should not open the door when it's dark outside. If you don't know who it is and not expecting anyone don't answer. I do the same thing. We have to stay safe.

A machete near the door on the side where if pushed you would end up.  A .40 Glock is the best.  A good long very sharp strong bladed kitchen knife (Not serrated!) Remember blades are faster than trying to reach and pull the slide on a pistol.

   I lived by myself since 16.  I had 12ga pump,.22 semi auto,flechette pistol I intended to survive.

Peep holes are worthless if you have light behind you and if cannot light the subject.

Cfk- I also just don't want to be bothered! I got tired of those stupid kids who go around saying they are in some "contest" and really every one of them was just selling magazines. In addition, I've only answered the door to 3-4 of them, but they have all tried to get inside my apt/house somehow. Shady dealings, if you ask me. I just quit answering the door. We even have no soliciting signs up but they ignore them.

It is kind of disconcerting.  Now I live in a house, not apt., and I can look out the front door, but then if I do and the person sees me looking out, it's odd.  We occasionally get people coming buy to sell magazines or do political polls and I try to ignore them--and don't even ask about the Jehovah's witnesses.  If it's a kid selling something, then I'd answer the door.  But if it was night time, I know I'd jump hearing a knock.

I don't open my door for strangers even if it's light outside.  I don't like to be bothered.  If it's clearly a girl scout or similar, I will relent if I have a few dollars on hand.  If someone were to knock well after ten PM, that would totally spook me.

At our old place we had an ALARM and it worked great sometimes scaring ppl away from hanging around at our door, we don't live their anymore.

My Land-lord fixed the timers so lights come on earlier when it gets dark.

I really appreciated that he did that.

Maybe you could put a light somewhere outside your door so it wouldn't be so dark...kwim?

At lot of ppl have had trouble with the ones claiming they can save you money on your hydro bills...I would not let them in.

Ignore and report them to the Police if they get too pushy.

Yes!

And my ds lives with me but we both deal with "Anxiety"...

I just would not answer...

We have two doors but they are locked.

I have a peep-hole at one and a window in the other plus another window.

I also lock our screen door and our windows to...;)...

My peep-hole is great for my ds and me...;)...

Usually I ALWAYS carry my keys.

Are you friendly with your neighbour?

Maybe they can call you first instead of knocking before coming to your door.

Have a code-word and change it up.

Better to be Safe!...:)

I wouldn't answer the door!! My neighbourhood is a bit sketchy and I made the mistake of opening the door last week.....it was some guy selling energy and basically demanding to see my hydro bill.  I had to slam the door to make him go away.

My parents live in the country and that can be *really* scary........it makes you think of those movies where people storm the house and cut off your communication!!

Sorry........that probably didn't make it better, but I live alone and I don't answer the door unless I know in advance who it is.  On Friday and Saturday nights people sometimes ring the buzzer with my name on it (obviously trying to get into the building) and it freaks me out!!

I actually had an alarm system at my old apartment and it was more of a burden than anything. I couldn't leave a window open at night, I was always accidentally punching in the wrong code somehow and then forgetting how to reset it, and I was almost charged once for too many "false alarms". There are dogs at the houses on either side of me, and they all started barking right after whoever was at my door walked away, so that tells me I shouldn't have answered! My mom has a dog that's part wolf. She hunts small animals at night, but she is very protective of her "family". It was interesting to watch her this summer try to "talk" to another dog while I was on the porch with the baby. She laid down on the porch right in front of us until that dog went away!
