Hi Everybody,
I've been in LA almost 7 months and I've gone out once. I don't know many people and the 3 or so people I know are unfortunately too busy with their lives. Who can blame them? I want to go out but I don't know where to go to mingle and meet people. Does anybody has ideas? I go to Santa Monica a lot cuz my 3 or so friends are there. Please give me some heads up if you can. Ciao!

I'm sorry I don't have any advice to you - because I live in the boring midwest. :p

But can I ask you a couple questions?

1) Why did you move to LA?
2) Where did you move from?
3) What do you do for a living?
4) What area of LA do you live in?

I'm rather curious - can you tell? :)

Thanks! (oh and if you don't feel comfortable giving out that info - I completely understand!) :)

I'd help if I could, but I've never even been to LA. I know if I lived in California, though, and was within driving distance to the beach, I'd be heading there a lot. And I'd also see if there were any country bars and places that had line dancing, but that's because that's what I'm into. I'm in the minority. LOL :)

Hi Sumthings,

To answer your questions

1) Why did you move to LA? I moved to LA because of a job and also I absolutely love the weather although at times it can be too hot :)
2) Where did you move from? I moved to LA from New York
3) What do you do for a living? I am a Formulator. It's pretty much a Scientist.
4) What area of LA do you live in? I about 40 minutes north of Santa Monica which is the Santa Clarita Valley.

I have visited LA but have never lived there. I wouldn't know where to begin. Have you considered trying to hook up with new friends online? Um, charities are always good. You could join the area chamber of commerce. Are you into politics? You could join the local political party of your choice. I KNOW California MUST have a ton of wine clubs. Do you like wine?

Thanks for the ideas cfk_3. I haven't get around to doing the whole online get together but I should look into it. Unfortunately, I am not a drinker at all but I will love to try some wine tasting and I will definitely look into my area chamber of commerce. Thanks.

How lonely in such a big place! :|

What did you do for fun in NY? Is there any way you can do some of the same things solo and perhaps meet others?

Does your job have a SIG (special interest group) that meets monthly or so? A little professional networking, a little finding people of like mindsets -- it might help. Certainly couldn't hurt your career! :)

Volunteering could be a great help. You do something you're interested in -- which gets you out of the house and actively doing something and it gives you the opportunity to meet others. Not all will become friends but you'll have common ground for talking over coffee. If you're into ecology at all, there's got to be a huge group that volunteers to work against the pollution, or cleaning beaches or...

Big Brothers/Big Sisters could be rewarding (if you're built that way), the Literacy Council could help you get started helping others to learn to read better, the local Humane Society likely needs dog walkers... The list goes on; these are my pet faves. Maybe there's something you could get behind for 6 months or so. Sometimes just filling up your time with an activity keeps your mind occupied while you meet people from completely different venues.

What does it take to be an extra in a movie or TV show? You're well placed to find out :) It could be kind of fun emailing distant friends and relations telling them to watch some episode because you're the one walking down the street halfway through the show!

By now, I'd have a season pass to Disneyland but that's just me. :)

Hope this gives you ideas -- even if the suggestions aren't ones you'd do, maybe it helps you think of something you'd like to do?

(edited for typo and horrible syntax)

Oh the ideas are absolutely wonderful and I am grateful to get them all. I will look into volunteering among other things. I used to do volunteering in NY and also, I am a sucker for architecture and art so I used to go to museums with friends but mostly, my friends and I just used to hangout a lot. I guess that's what I've miss. Thanks for the suggestions. I really appreciate them.

i know this message is a little late in coming, but i only just saw this thread today. i have lived in los angeles my whole life, and spent the better part of the last few years enjoying (sometimes a bit too much) all the nightlife here has to offer.
what kind of places do you like going to? i don't spend very much time on the west side, but am pretty familiar with hollywood and the downtown and silverlake/los feliz areas.
do you like it out here? i only got to go to new york once, but i loved it.
hope you're enjoying it out here. by the way, the museums here are great for hanging out. MOCA and the Getty especially, and i know they both have pretty cool stuff at night, for sure during the summer.
let me know if you want any info. i would love to pass along my going out knowledge. =)

Not to beat a dead horse (from another thread), but there's a very active "MeetIn" group in LA. It's a Web site where various people post a variety of events, and you can pick and choose what you like. They have more than 3,000 members in LA - so it might be a way to see some new things in the city and meet some folks in your neighborhood.

I used to belong to the one in Denver, and it can be a lot of fun.

I am so sorry if I got your reply late. Thanks for your suggestions and definitely do pass on your going out knowledge. I love the Getty museum but I haven't heard much about evening activities there so I will check it out. I know they had something a couple of weeks ago on every Friday but it's over. Being a little older now, I am not big on club scene but I love being in a good lounge, beach or pretty much almost anything fun. I usually head to Sunset Blvd and the areas around there since I don't know any where else to go. I've joined some network group and so far, it's been very fruitful and fun. Please pass on your knowledge. Thanks :)
