You have to read between the lines. No Republican can win the nomination or the Presidency without winning the Christian Right. It's a given. Whether or not the candidate him/herself is a Christian, he/she has to satisfy some minimum requirements, one of which is being pro-life. But as the gov of a liberal state like MA where abortion is a sacrament, Romney was always pro-abort. Then a few years back he suddenly does a 180 and decides he is solidly pro-life (I am guessing in anticipation of a Presidential run). What does that tell you about him ? Religion is not the first thing in his mind. He is not a religious zealot by any means. Heck, being a Mormon he isn't even a considered a Christian for the most part, something Huck exploited very well in IA. So when he makes a statement like the one you quoted, it's a clear case of pandering. Nothing more, nothing less. Is it ideal? Probably not. But in politics you have to do what you have to do in order to win. That's the nature of the job. But if you look at Romney's base values he is actually very libertarian. Small govt, low taxes, less regulation and also strong defense etc. As another example consider Guiliani, ex mayor of NY. To get elected in another liberal state like NY he too had to be pro-abort. There's no way NYers would elect a pro lifer to govt. But unlike Romney he didn't do a mea culpa saying one day he had an epiphany and came to the conclusion that abortion was morally wrong. He just said say he would appoint strict constitutionalist judges (leaving open the possibility that Roe v Wade could be overturned some day). Sorry , not good enough for the Christians. Didn't fly in middle America and consequently lost badly. Moral of the story - don't judge Romney on one statement he made to the public. Look at his entire record.
I do know that Romney's not a zealot and I understand what you're saying, but he's using exactly the tactic that Bush's camp used against Kerry; he's the DEFINITION of a flip-flopper. I do believe that the issues come first, but I'm none too thrilled with being lied to either, especially after the last time; trust is huge in this election and as I saw someone quote, he's run as the "man of a thousand faces" and that was an article that predicted a Republican victory in the general election. What's the sense of telling everyone you're a "big hunter"?? As though we're not going to figure out that you've picked up a gun twice in your life? I don't like him and I've never liked him and I didn't vote for him here either.
And my condolences. :) I was hoping for an Obama (or Edwards, but that wasn't going to happen) victory tonight as well.
I got in line in Ward 9 and voted, my biggest gripe is I'm Undeclared (NH's name for independent) and as you know voting in a primary you must choose between a democratic or republican ticket the most annoying part of it all is than you need to then fill out a seperate piece of paper and put in a seperate box afterwards to request to be put BACK to undeclared or else you will automatically be changed to the party that you selected to vote for in the primary. That is the most STUPID thing I have ever heard of in my life. Whatever party you choose to register is what you should be registered as no matter how you vote.
It is the dumbest thing I have ever seen in my life. Really dumb. My biggest gripe.

Actually it was interesting that in the CNN exit polls, more men than women found Hillary's tears endearing and humanizing; the women were perturbed and thought it showed weakness.

Must be a trick he learned when he was the "poor child" of a factory worker. It is those humble blue collar roots showing. LoL
