I decided I'm going to try and go back on my "meal plan" to drop some more weight before school starts.

I found a couple of things that work as a lifestyle change since I do not diet since that implies a short term fix.
I stopped eating any land animal protein which means meat and dairy for that is linked to cancer. I also work on not eating any processed foods and focus on the superfoods which means I don't have to think about what I eat as long as I focus on them for nutrition, anti-cancer, anti-oxidant and all emcompassing good-for-you foods. This means eating of brocolli, salmon, spinach, soy products, almonds, blueberries and high fiber carbs. I drink LOTS of water as well (recommended is number of ounces that is equal to 1/2 your body weight).
My brother went on something like that (vegan) and he is below his college weight. He is 51 yrs old and went on it to control his borderline high blood pressure which it did.
I exercise 5-7 times a week, mainly focusing on cardiovascular exercises 45-50 min to burn calories and for heart health. I also walk my dog daily, twice a day plus sometimes bike to work (4 miles each way).
I don't count calories but just avoid eating out, eating processed foods, eating fatty or high sugar foods/drink. I do indulge in wine. I never starve myself.
My most favorite food is pizza which I only eat when I am with someone who decides to have it. Whenever I am with my children, we do not eat fast food or do soft drinks or any high fat/sugar foods.
Good luck,
Mark
"Healthy food is much more expensive than not healthy food and it doesn't fill me up!"
OMG, that is so true!
Sometimes I wonder if some of us just have a different type of metabolism and the "normal" things don't work.
Cl-Shywon,
I have always found exercising very easy and enjoyable to do but I cannot seem to control my eating habits! You've inspired to start again today. I am on a budget and I hear you in that healthy foods are a lot more expensive to buy. The cost of fruits, vegetables and nuts are so expensive compared to a packet of chips, lollies or a chocolate.
Apparently, it is better to eat six smaller meals across the day rather than three larger meals and you need to force yourself to eat even if you're not hungry. Eating less or starving yourself will more than likely result in you snacking or binge eating during the night when you are burning less calories. I went to the gym in the morning and did a cycle class at 6:15am. At 9am - I mixed up a protein shake and ate it with two wheat bix, at 11am - I ate a small turkey sandwich and again at 1pm, at 3pm - I had a protein shake and I'll eat again when I get home. When you exercise, you need to eat carbs for energy but try and eat carbs in the first three meals of the day. On the alternate days you don't exercise, try and lower your carb intake. The point of this exercise is that you should not be starving if you eat every two hours. I try and eat well during the week and then eat whatever I want on the weekend.
Good luck!

1. Grilled fat free american cheese on wheat bread. With a great tomato soup it's the perfect lunch.
2. Try eating Boca Burgers. They are soy burgers ( don't let this scare you, they taste even better than the real thing. ) you pop them in the microwave for 1 minute then fix it up on a bun with your toppings.
3.Hardboil some eggs one night than for a couple days you will have a snack thats filling. Eggs will fill you up easily and they are a good source of protein.
4.The Southbeach diet has a frozen breakfast burrito thats awesome and low cal. takes 2 min to heat up. frozen section at the grocery store.
5. Cl-shywon. pb&j is actually beneficial for you to eat. buy yourself the less calorie peanut butter and with jelly it makes for a great sandwich.
6. Try veggie dogs. about 1.5 grams of fat and 60 calories and they taste the same as a hot dog.
7. Keep canned veggies on hand in your cupboard. theyre fast and yummy.
8.Pickles make for a good snack but watch the sodium
9.Make homemade wraps. get a tortilla and put some chicken, lettuce, mushrooms, onions and your choice of other veggies or sauce. they have great spinach tortilla wraps now.
10.Drink fat free chocolate milk when you need a snack, its god calcium and actually filling.....
I hope you all will get some benefits from my ideas. Just so you know im a single girl who lives alone so i wouldnt suggest anything thats not fast or cheap to make. These all helped me. Stay away from the adkins diet, and remember Wheat bread IS good for you to eat. No carb is just a quick fix. Heart healthy is the way to go!!!!
Very nice and useful tips, overall!

However, studies have shown that wheat bread (especially white) is the number one factor responsible for weight gain in most cases, so one should probably try to diversify their carb intake.

I think the distinction is that WHOLE grain bread is good for you. A whole grain (whole wheat, whole oat, whole rye) should be listed as one of the first three ingredients. Preferably the first.
Also, I am a big advocate of avoiding foods with high sugar content - especially high fructose corn syrup. It packs a lot of empty calories and is just bad for you in general. Check your juice, yogurt, bread, cracker and snack labels. It's in everything.
Shy -- you do have to find the best fit for you. There's no "magic formula" that works for everyone. In general, adding more fruits and veggies, cutting portion sizes and exercising more are good rules to follow. Like Mark said, it really takes a long-term lifestyle change rather than a diet.
One note -- it takes about 3,500 calories to burn off a pound of fat. So, reducing calorie intake and increasing exercise frequency and intensity can help.
GOOD LUCK. It sound like you are making great choices, and you will get there. Hang in there. :)
AJ, enjoying life with C.

Yes, you are right--whole grain or even multi-grain is good. I think rye has more useful nutrients than wheat, though. You are right on about sugar, it can hide everywhere, like fruit juices.

I have been trying to move toward smaller, more frequent meals.
One thing I've been picking up lately in the store is pomegrenate juice. I get the Cherry flavored one because the true thing is too tart for me. They also have a blueberry and mango one too. I have found a slight increase in energy from it. Its about 4 bucks a bottle which is expensive. But its better than buying some of the other juices.
I'm also a cheese freak. So I've been trying to buy baby Gouda. One of the little guys is a serving and its a perfect snack.
And I have no frozen meals in my freezer. Chicken, frozen veggies and low-fat oven fries. Those frozen meals are good as a buffer but not good as a reliable meal everyday.
And spinach!! Get in some spinach...throw it on a salad or sandwich. Tastes great!
