Meetup events - have you been to one?

I have been thinking of attending a meetup event such as hiking or biking. I like being outdoors and these events are easy to do.
I am wondering if anyone here has been to you
I like meet up but as with everything it is hit and miss.
I am part of a meetup group that I started and was the organizer for, but now someone else is organizing. It is cultural in nature. I met some women who have become friends as a result. It has never become a large group, and for the most part, it was a good experience especially the first year. In the second year several socially awkward (think Aspberger's) people joined the group which made it uncomfortable. I think meetups will probably always attract a certain number of shy and awkward people, but I'd say the overwhelming majority aren't.
I think it's a great idea to join an outdoor type group if that is what you enjoy. Those groups seem to have more people in them, at least in my neck of the woods, and I'll bet they attract more men. And if you live in a large city, there are probably many you could choose from. I think it's better to do things that aren't "singles" oriented--I think an activity takes the pressure off. I think more general groups like wine tastings attract a very divergent group and you may not have that much in common with them. And anything that is labeled "singles" is just the kiss of death to me.
Look at it this way: you can try it once and see how you like it. No big loss if it doesn't work out. And, you could always start your own meetup group!
I think meetup is a great idea. Before I join the group, I check the past events and who went to them. Click on some people's profiles to have an idea about the clientele, so to speak. I am a member of a few groups, but don't necessarily have time to participate, but all the events I went to, I enjoyed.
If you don't like the experience with one event, don't get discouraged, you never know who will come to the next event, or you can always try another group.
A while ago, I signed up for a parenting group. I later realized that it's mostly for housewives with babies who came to Mtl because of their H's jobs. I went to a "Mom's night out" once and was feeling a bit uncomfortable as they were criticizing Montreal women, but one of them was still interesting.... Anyways, I lost interest in the group, but a couple of months ago, they suggested to organize playdates for kids of different age groups. And one of the playdates was organized by a cute single dad (French) with a son of the same age as mine. I couldn't go. But 2 weeks ago they organized a weekend brunch for parents and that guy went. Well, we talked. When everyone left, our sons stayed playing and we talked while waiting. And he told me that I could pass by his place anytime so the kids could play together. So you never know....
Honestly, I'm counting more on meetup to meet a man, then on OLD.
Hi;
The first meetup event I went to was a movie followed by going out to eat--it was nerve wracking not knowing anyone but I ended up having a good time.
You have to try Meetup! I like it for hiking and outdoors activities, sometimes for music shows,
JT do you happen to live in Toronto Canada?
I belong to several parent related ones and it has been a godsend. We haven't been able to click w/neighbours here so it was the first group that exposed my children to play dates & friends. We now have preschool but I still meet up with the mommies group for book club & dinner/movie nights.
I also do the social groups - bowling, salsa dancing, etc. And there is a family oriented snowboarding/skiing group that always doing fun things on the w/end. But hubby works on the w/ends so that hasn't worked for us.
Go for it!!!
I've been to several. It's hit and miss and I haven't been persistent to make any long-term friend. Overall, I like the meetup groups. They provide opportunities for a single person to go out and do different things without working too hard.
