Message board mechanics: is this as good as it gets?

I know people have complained about the "new" message boards, and I'm going to join in. Why can't the clunkiness be fixed? Just now I had to sign in twice (again). The old boards let you sign in and stay signed in. Oh yes, I know there's a check box to "keep me signed in" but it doesn't work. Is this as good as it gets? It's been almost a year hasn't it? What's the hold up?

The old system would send you an email when someone responded to your message. No more.

There used to be spellcheck. No more.

The navigation is totally screwed up on the iPad---the breadcrumbs don't work. Plus, it doesn't resize in portrait mode. And on the iPhone--the text does not resize in portrait or landscape mode, so you have to scroll to read. And, it's incredibly s-l-o-w on all devices.

C'mon, iVillage, let's step it up.

Yep, and seeing how poorly the technical part of this site has been for an extended length of time, it makes me regret not having gone into computer science or web design. Because apparently, a tech person or consultant - whatever is being used - can get paid for allowing the same glitches to continue for a long time on a site, yet not actually have to figure out how to fix it.

It's going to take all traffic on this site grinding to a halt on all of their pages and message boards.  That is the only thing they will understand that will prompt them to hire someone competant to fix the codes their monkey wrote for them.

It seems to work better using Firefox than IE8... when I sign in, at first it seems like it doesn't take it, then the page refreshes itself and I'm signed in. Last Monday, however, that wasn't working on IE8. They finally fixed it wihtin the day.  But I, too, noticed that there is no more spell check and you used to be able to access a list all of your posts from your profile page--no more.  It's really become a shell of its former self here. Very sad.  I wish it still had the set up it had about 10 years ago.  I'm so sick of having to wade through drivel about pregnancy and babies and mommydom.

You just sign in twice?  LOL.  I sign in a minimum of three times and I also miss spell check.  I usually have to sign in then go back up to the browser and type in the ivillage address(again).  Somehow, it tricks the site and most times I'll find that my sign in worked whereas, if I don't, I get a message that I'm not authorized to post(mobile).  That's usually the only way I'm able to post, period.

You guys are just beginners.  I've been on these boards off and on for over 10 years.  I've quit several times over the "improvements" that have made it progressively harder and harder to be a regular poster.  Today, I brought up the site, and it said "Hello Fissatore"........then I tried to post this reply, and I had to sign in again.  This is on my old fashioned PC, no fancy new devices.  When I started it was so easy........you went to whatever board you wanted, and there were the posts.  The main post's title and posters name was there, along with the date and time.  The title of the first reply was indented just below it.  The next reply was indented the same amount under the first one.  In some cases, people would respond to a reply, and that response was indented beneath the one being replied to.  Nice and simple.......you could see all the replies, even if there were 20-30 of them.  And there were that many sometimes, because this was a popular site.  These boards were ACTIVE......if you were gone for more than a day, there would be 50-75 posts to catch up on!  It was fun and interesting.  Now, it's a chore......more and more aggravating.  I used to be here 2-3 times a day, now it's once or twice a week, because it's so dead, very few new posts, and less replies.  It's like everything else on the internet........the good stuff eventually goes away, and we get garbage in it's place.  Glad someone posted this complaint, to give the rest of us a place to vent!!!

I agree--I use Google Chrome as the browser because IE didn't seem to work--however at work, Chrome won't event let me look at the IV website at all--the page never loads.  So I'm using IE and then some days I can sign in after only 2-3 tries, other days it might take me 10 tries and some days I can't sign in at all.  I have also had the situation where I go to the site & I'm already logged in, then I try to reply & can't--or I was logged in, replied to several posts and then suddenly was logged out.  I also can't see which posts have new replies--the only way I can tell is to look at the time of the last reply.

I know that this board seems ok but there are many boards, particularly in the parenting section where people basically stopped posting--we used to get several new posts a week and now maybe it's down to once a week.  So it seems like they kind of shot themselves in the foot with the changes.

The help board is where a lot of the updates have been posted.

Hopefully that links right. I'm having issues typing this. Anyway- basically it looks like they are hiring a new tech team and restructuring. It's about time. We've been complaining for months about the lack of progress and getting no answers to our questions. Several of the CMs have resigned lately too, which says a lot. I remember the old outline view as well and liked it much better than this one. You couldn't bump posts back to the top, but at least you knew if a post was new. We all also used to have ivillage email addresses. That was nice. Hopefully hiring a new tech team will help us see some progress.

I upgrated IE on my work computer to the newest version & I have to say it was much easier to log in and the pages are loading much faster, so maybe that will help other people to try it.

I SO wish I had some answers for you all! But I'd be pretty much repeating what Shywon posted. As for email updates, I can *sometimes* get the subscription feature to work- I have to click "subscribe" immediately after posting my reply or new thread. If I don't, then the feature doesn't work for me. Also, after clicking subscribe, I then  have to click on " my bookmarks and subscriptions" (right hand side of page), then click "tab 2", then "edit" (next to the thread I want to subscribe to), then under "send method", select "HTML mail". I think the default is "web". Sounds like a lot of steps but once you get into the habit of doing it, it's not too bad.

I spoke too soon cause yesterday I couldn't log in at all.  I don't understand why one day everything works fine, in fact better than it had before, and then the next day, doesn't work at all.
