(Mis)adventures in speed dating

Pardon the length, I just copied and pasted what I put in my blog...

10 dudes, 6 minutes each is the premise, and you take notes, check off if you'd like to talk to them or not later and you enter your choices online and if there are mutual matches, they send you contact information, so here we go....

Bachelor #1-J5

* Bald, tall, skinny (like real skinny), works at a credit union, lives in Troy, has a house and an Alaskan Malamute, has a backyard the size of a football field, glasses, laughed at my sick attempt at humor, but there just wasn't anything there.

Bachelor #2-T

* Lives in Lapeer, is going to be 30 in August, he's a probation officer, also coaches football, made sure to repeatedly reference how he built his own home. Loves football. Did I mention that he built his own home? Bushy eyebrows, dark hair, kind of short and stocky.

Bachelor #3-J4

* As soon as he sat down, told me how he got out of a ticket by being honest. Proceeded to tell me in great detail about his honesty with the officer. Talked about himself the entire time, all 6 minutes, didn't ask once about me. The bell rang to signal the end of the 6 minutes and he accused the organizers of shorting time.

Bachelor #4-J3

* This guy was so nice but it was just sad, he moved here from Mexico, an engineer at GM, loves to dance, short little long haired Mexican guy with no family :(

Bachelor #5-D

* Another engineer, works at the Tech Center, kind of a tool, when he asked me about myself I replied "well, I was just released from a Mexican prison, I can't really talk about it..." and he said "are you serious?!?!?!" Freaking engineers, they have no sense of humor. Kind of shy, but then again, aren't all engineers?

Bachelor #6-J2

* J2 has big teeth and works for the FBI. Lives in east side area, likes to sail and jetski (not sure if he has a boat but I would almost hang out with him just to go on his boat), not really into him....another girl and I were talking after and she said he should be on gay speed dating.

Bachelor #7-M2

* M2 had a very limp handshake, blonde hair, lives in east side area, probably another engineer, kind of quiet (again, the engineer type), has been renovating his home since he bought it, kind of a homebody.

Bachelor #8-A

* Another short one, wtf? He's in school full time for a science degree, works weekends at a doctors office, really doesn't do anything but school. Is from Albania originally.

Bachelor #9-J

* Okay, first off, total freaking cutie. I think blue eyes, had spiky hair but in a messy, tousled look. As soon as he sat down I said "welcome to the next round of repetitive questions" so he told me to ask him some original ones, so I asked "are you married? have you been to prison? do you have kids? are you a drug abuser or alcoholic? if you could go anywhere tomorrow for 2 days where would you go?" and he actually told me yes, he was in prison, but it was a Mexican prison so it doesn't count. Points for being sarcastic! Then he asked me what I considered to be an alcoholic, and I said "someone who drinks on a daily basis to forget about their problems" and he said "no, I like to have a couple beers every day after work". He's 28 or 29, lives in Centerline with a roomie, is a golf course manager, loves being outdoors, and he's just so cute and just screams "I like to party"...at least that's the impression I got from him. But very laid back and kept up with my sarcasm.

Bachelor #10-M

* Okay, the age range is 25-32, I would have put him at about 38. His face had the leathered, spent too much time in the sun or smoking look. He's divorced, no kids, and well, that's all I wrote down because I kept trying to guess if his crows feet were from smoking or just old age....and he told another girl about his 17 year old son "I mean nephew" so yeah, definitely shady.

So which ones did I mark yes to? Well, #1 is a no, #2 would be a maybe, #3 BIG FAT NO, #4, nice guy but not my type, at all, #5 I'd maybe have a coffee (me, non coffee) with, #6 Probably not, #7 maybe do a coffee meetup, #8-no, #9-YES, but this is not relationship material ladies, he would be someone to just chill out with, have a few beers, and that's probably it. He doesn't exude the "I'm looking for a girlfriend" vibe, but rather the "I like to party" vibe. Totally cool guy, that's your business, but he'd be fun to look at ;) and #10-NO

After we finished I was talking to another virgin speed dater and we were swapping our opinions on the dudes, and she said "I swear, I'm destined to be alone" and yeah, maybe that's me too....I can't say that I would do this again, who knows, but well, I can cross this off of my list of things to do before I die.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I wonder about humor at a first meet especially sarcasm. As a former East Coaster, Noo Joisey no less, I could dish it fairly well but now I've been Northwesternized, a kinder gentler, laid back type of guy.

I came from a family of engineers (me, my two brothers and my father all have graduate engineering degrees) so I know from where you speak.

I contemplated speed dating for my guess that the women would be "better" than the men? Better as in better match? Anyway it sounds like both fun and a challenge.

So far, I have one mutual match (you go online and enter your "scores", whether you want to talk to them further or not) and guess who the mutual match is? Yes, cutie, party-type guy...but hey, I could think of worse things to do during the summer then hang out on a deck at a restaurant on the water drinking beers with a cute boy ;)

Rebainmi,

I would love to find out the origin of everyone's "name" on ivillage ;) Probably not as interesting as they may seem but . . .

You are definitely braver than me! I have been tossing around this idea for I know two to three years now. I'm just too chicken.

What are we supposed to make of these men? It's hard to say. Maybe you could give one or two of them a chance? What would it hurt? If anything, perhaps you would have some more interesting stories for us. If you decide to do so, I'd love to know how it turns out. Big kudos to you for being such a brave little broad!

Oh God...I get offended when people bitch about Bostonians (well, East Coasters in general), but I really am one of those people...sarcastic, MORE than a little guarded, I kind of have an attitude if people are rude with me or what have you...I'm really a nice, friendly person under that, though! :) If people are nice to me, I'll be nice back, haha.

Anyway, sounds like fun....and maybe this guy will surprise you with his vibe....or just be a fun summer fling. :)

Ahh, your experience sounds just like mine. A smattering of engineers, shy guys, socially inept guys and one total cutie. :)

The good thing is, you kept good notes and it shows that you're good at getting to know the basics about people in a short time. To me, that's just great practice for more dates later.

Maybe you'll at least have a beer with the cutie. :)

Edited to add - I really like engineers, by the way.
