I drive a huge pickup (F250 Super Duty Crew Cab) and I always back into a spot for a few reasons -

1. It's a long vehicle and if I back up, more of it fits into the space.

2. It really is easier to drive out of it than to back up when I leave.

That's a big pet peeve of mine as well.

I think it's usually the people with the uber-long SUVs or pickups - maybe it makes it easier to pull out? The way I see it, backing up in one of those things is going to be a pain whether you do it on the way in or the way out, so why bother?

A few years ago, I witnessed a long pickup like that backing into a spot. Trouble was, he backed into the spot NEXT to the empty one he was aiming for, and completely plowed a Camaro. More reason not to do it.

Edited to add: I didn't see sisfox's reply when I posted. There's that answered. :)

Nope, not just big trucks.

So your truck suddenly shrinks when you back in?

Yeah, that I don't get. I drive a fairly small car, and I can't think of any reason I would need to back into a space.

I drive a small car, and I'll sometimes back into a space. But I won't hold someone up to do it if they're right behind me.

I prefer to have greater visibility when I'm pulling out of a space, if I can. I've been almost-creamed too many times by people zipping through a parking lot at top speed while I'm inching out carefully in reverse, especially when I'm inching out from between two SUVs and I can't see squat!

I'm not sure if I'll explain this clearly...but here goes LOL

The front tires sit close to the front bumper of the truck. If you pull in, you can only go as far as the front of the hood.

If you back in, you can go the whole way to the rear tires and the part of the bed that overhangs allows you to put more of the vehicle in the slot.

Here's a side view of a truck that may help:

Of course, this doesn't help with nose-to-nose parking - I just take up two lengths in that case and it doesn't matter if I pull in or back in. LOL

I don't get what you're trying to say. If someone can't see a 7' truck moving, they need glasses.

Doesn't that mean your truck takes up some of the real estate in the other parking space behind you? Or do you mean slots next to a curb?

Yes - if it's nose to nose parking, I do need 2 spaces.

But in my parking garage at work, I park perpidicular to the wall (so my bumper is up against an exterior wall). At the mall, grocery store, etc, I usually park in BFE and do a lot of walking.
