OK - now I get what you're saying - and I am super cautious about pulling out. I was taught to try to make eye contact with other drivers before pulling out. I guess I'm so used to pulling out, I actually have a harder time backing out and seeing if it's clear for me to go.

Yes - that's exactly the areas I try to find to park in.
<<>>
And in those lots, I park way out and pull straight through to the 2nd space - so I can just pull out of the space. I love my truck, but it's not exactly the most convenient of vehicles. LOL
<<< I am short and can't always see what's coming when I'm backing out of a space in a parking lot (especially if I'm parked between vehicles that obstruct my view of what's on the other side of them),>>>
Well, that's why I look before I pull out! If anyone's coming, I wait. Then they don't need to be concerned about whether I'm moving or not or whether they can TELL that I'm moving or not--cuz I'm not gonna be in their way, forward or backward.
I'm with Stacey, though I'm not short. (Not at all!) I just can't see around anything when I'm backing out, and I HATE the thought of someone seeing my reverse lights and plowing on ahead anyway. Or kids running behind me. Etc. It happens far too frequently for me, so pulling out forward is MUCH preferred.
And oy, the parking lot sharks! Don't get me started! :)
LOL If I see a big truck or SUV, I try not to park next to it anyway, because usually, I assume I don't have room and don't want to chance accidentally hitting it with my door or something.
I personally do it because of blind spots. I don't know how many times I've almost been hit or have almost hit someone because I can't see. I don't have a rotating head and obviously, the view is much more unobstructed from the front of the car. I don't back in as a rule but when I think to do it (if the lot is dead, not crowded or busy) I'll back in.
See, I'm like sisfox, I make eye contact and honestly, I think it's easier to do when someone is pulling out rather than backing out. I think the risk goes both ways because, while for you it may be easier for you to see what they are doing when they're backing out, they may not necessarily see you ; ) I would think that the chances of getting hit would be greater when their visibility is limited.

I'm talking about the anticipation of moving.
I've been almost-creamed way more times by people pulling forward out of a spot than I have by people backing out.

I only back in sometimes, but I do once in a while.

Oh lord.
Don't ever park next to me.
