myspace accounts

This is sort of a random ramble i guess. What on Earth is the deal with myspace accounts these days?? It seems like EVERYONE from 14-40 has one! What is happening? This is obviously no offense to anyone who has one...since many of you probably do...but i guess i dont understand them. Why cant people just use email?? Now it's like people need to have a special page to post pictures of themselves, personal details and have all their friends and new friends contact them? I personally would be sort of uncomfortable with this. I know that you can go in and look pretty much anyone up by their name and email address...i am guilty of doing this to people...just because i was curious if they had an account. I know you can set it to private...but then i guess what is the point?

I dont know...i guess i'm in the minority on this one folks. And again no offense but it seems like they are often attention whorish? Not all of them, but many i have seen are of people who have posted pics of themselves in little clothing or very sexy pictures...I just dont know why they'd want this on the net? lol..i have heard that some employment places even go as far to look up people on myspace and if their account is rauncy/inappropriate they dont get hired. Or ive even heard of people getting in trouble at work if they have an account like this.

I like it for the simple reason that it's fun.

I agree with you completely, I don't get it either. Anybody that I'm close with either sees me regularly or we talk on the phone. Posting my life on a webpage would seem redundant and pointless, almost impersonal! Plus if you don't know me or we don't talk, there's probably a reason, lol. I have to admit that I tried myspace in college, but cancelled a few weeks later because I found it annoying that people I hadn't talked to in YEARS wanted to 'friend' me. Hello? Send me an email, actually see how I'm doing, what I'm up to...don't try and 'up' your numbers.

Now that I'm out of college I really feel it's even more pointless and I just don't have time. LOL, somehow I manage to be on here though occasionally when I'm bored at work, so maybe I could make the time if I wanted too.

yeah i understand the point of them in some ways...but again email/phone seems just as good. I guess i am more of a private person. I dont need people i dont know looking at my webpage and seeing all my details...because often there are some personal details in there...

I have a page, but I use mine mostly to look up bands and listen to new music from bands that they post on their page. I also connect with friends there, but that's a minor focus to me. They have interest groups, i.e. for travel lovers, and you can post to message boards much like you can here.

I also have friends who use it to post current pics of their babies for family, keep a family journal for people far away, blog about their travels, etc. It can be used for a lot more than just flirting or dating.

I generally keep my main profile photo set to one that's a cartoon or famous character (i.e. Sally from Peanuts), because I don't want to "advertize" myself there. You also have the option to set your profile to private so that only your friends can see you - not the whole world.

I think it's just a new toy for people - the way e-mail was when it first started. I was in college when e-mail really took off (yes, I'm old) and we used to sit in the computer lab for hours just e-mailing. That was even pre-Internet. Blows my mind now that I did that. I think myspace is the modern version of that.

AJ, enjoying life with C.

My family is all over the country and we use myspace accounts to keep in touch.

I'm not worried about my employer...I hardly think baby pictures and such are objectionable.

I LOVE Myspace.

Mainly because unlike using email or the phone, it really does help in keeping in contact with people and to be able to see what is going on in people's live. And I've been able to reconnect with people from the past.

I think the pictures, comments, blogs and whatever give it more of a personal feel than just an email. Many people these days aren't comfortable calling someone they haven't spoken to in a long time and asking 'What's new'. One Myspace, you can drop a breif message and it feels less intrusive. And you can see what's new with them, who they are friends with, post bulletins of events and get togethers. For me, its really works wellin meeting new people and networking. I've met several people in industries I'm intersted in and made friends I wouldn't have normally met otherwise.

Yeah, it's like those (IMO, tacky) form letters people send out with their holiday cards, except online!

I don't get it, either, and I am inclined to look askance at people over 25 or so who have myspace accounts.

I didn't get the MySpace obsession until a friend convinced me to "just give it a shot... you'll like it." Within a week after posting my profile, I reconnected with my best friend from grade school and high school that I hadn't seen in over 12 years. I also met my current boyfriend through MySpace. In an amazing bit of coincidence... my boyfriend is best friends with the husband of the high school friend I reconnected with. Guess its fate courtesy of MySpace... lol.
