New look, new outlook

I just came back from the salon where I had at least 10 inches taken off my hair (it's now just a bit longer than chin length). It's my first drastic haircut since probably college (I'm 32), and it feels so good!

I left the salon feeling renewed in spirit as well as look. I have been feeling as droopy as my old hair lately, and I think this was just the change I needed to pick myself up a bit. Maybe I'll have enough energy to start dating again as well -- all part of the spring rebirth thing, I guess.

This also made me realize how little I pamper myself these days. It was a nice treat to go to a place where they offered me tea, gave me a scalp massage, shampoo and cut. I usually write that stuff off as frivolous, but it sure was nice today.

Just had to share. :) Yea!

Maybe because I dont like my hair, I dont understand why people get bent out of shape over haircuts and stuff. I've had a lot of bad haircuts, bad hair colors (my hair was eggplant last spring...language barrier there...somehow red streaks came out as purple...whoda thunk??) and bad perms. Sometimes my hair looks really good though so the bad times dont bug me as much. Its just hair afterall.

It grows out just like you said. That eggplant color was really striking for the few 2 weeks...thereafter, it was a nice shade of..something close to red. Haaaaa!

I do think I need to make clear when I get my hair cut again in May is that I have naturally wavy hair and she needs to cut it for the way my hair lays. This chick in March completely flat-ironed my hair after she cut it. Which is fine but then I had huge chunks of layers in my hair ...I dont think she knew any other way to style hair though since her hair was straight as a board as well. Thankfully the gal that will do it in May and for the next 4 months is very good at what she does and will be styling my hair on my wedding day...she'll cut it to get it ready for that which will help.

I've never liked my hair either. I had to laugh at your comment that your hair is wavy but in weird ways...mine too! I too have kept it short for many years. Recently my hairdresser told me about a product called Flat Out as well as using a flat iron to straighten my bangs. My bangs are really the only thing that bug me, but this product and the flat iron are really helping.

I recently have been looking at old photos of my hair at different stages of growing up. O-M-G!! When I was about 15, the hair to have was Peggy Lipton's on the Mod Squad (I know many of you are way too young to remeber this TV show.) I tried everything to get my hair like that: stick straight, parted in the middle, down below the shoulders. I used huge orange juice cans (and slept on them) as well as hair styling TAPE. Yes, tape. Oh, and Dippity-Do. And I live in humid Florida so by the time I walked to school, most of what I did was for naught. But it just seemed so crucial to fit in then.

But back to the original post: I think it's very important to pamper yourself, and cutting your hair can really mark a change in your life. Hair is so tied to our identity. For so many years I felt that it was too self indulgent to get manicures or to buy expensive personal care products, but not anymore! I love having manicures and pedicures, although I mostly do them myself. Plus, my hair is 95% gray and I just started having my hair colored every three weeks instead of every four weeks. This may seem indulgent, but I don't care. I don't think this has to mean you're a slave to fashion or succumbing to ageism. Plus, I just started buying a really expensive shampoo by Kheil's. It really is gentler on my scalp.

And another thing: for many years I've also bought fresh flowers at the grocery store. Nothing expensive, just the $3 a bunch kind. It's quite a lift.

>>Not to burst y'all's bubble but I have heard that men like long hair. I always feel a little bad when I have to cut my hair. <<

I agree with Ruby - all men are different. I actually have received a lot more appreciative looks from men since I cut my hair -- maybe because I feel so good and that's shining through. Or, maybe because it actually just looks better (which it does).

In any case, again I agree with Ruby that no man is going to tell me how to wear my hair. Not everything I do in life is centered around men. :)

I also agree with the other posters who have 'problem' hair. My problem is baby-fine hair that won't hold a curl or a bit of volume no matter what. I have come to love it, though.
