no longer lurking...

I've been following the posts on a few of these boards off and on for the past 10 years and thought I would stop lurking and post a bit more.

I feel I have gotten to know a few of the regular posters here and you all seem like great women with lots to offer.

A bit about myself:

I'm 49, divorced since 2002 with a 22 year old son that no longer lives with me. I'm originally from Holland, but grew up in a Canadian prairie province from the time I was 3 until 1987. I came to Vancouver to visit a friend and fell in love with the city. Lived downtown, close to the beach and Stanley Park and had a couple of jobs; one for a commercial credit reporting agency and then got a second job when Starbucks came to town.

I ended up moving back to holland after visiting with family and meeting my husband in Amsterdam. My son was born there and we all moved back to Canada in 1992. We lived in a suburb of Vancouver up until a couple of years ago. I really missed living downtown and was able to move back. I have had a few shorter and one longer relationship over the years, but am now single and working downtown.

Hoping to be able to add to some of the discussions here.

Welcome, Purp!  52 and divorced here, no kids, live in Ohio.  I love Vancouver, too.  Great town.  If you don't mind my asking, how do you meet people to date?  Do you go online?  I am sure it is as tough where you are as it is just about everywhere in our general age group.

Thanks Gleannfia,

Yes, online is where I find my dates. I don't think I have much longer there though. 49 seems to be the cutoff for most guys, no matter how old they are. lol.

Vancouver is a great place to live. I'm really enjoying the downtown life and being so close to everything here.

Yes, it is funny you should mention that.  I have noticed a huge difference from even 3 years ago.  A lot of men seem to have a problem with 50, even if the woman is attractive and in good shape.  No matter what they themselves look like or how old they are!  LOL

Welcome to the neighborhood!  So glad you came out of lurkdom!

If you've been lurking for ten years, you probably know my story- 36, single for six years, hearing the clock ticking loudly.

Welcome to the board, Purp!  You found a great group here so I hope you stay & chit-chat with us.

I'm 35, never married, and no children.  Choosing to stay single because the guys I've dated have been less than stellar.

Guess I shouldn't be one to talk Gleannfia. I usually end up with younger guys; not a lot younger, but my last long-term boyfriend was 3 years younger. So it isn't only the men that are looking for younger. lol.

You are right about most of their expectations. They seem to think a belly is sexy on themselves, but out of the question for a woman.

Yes Shywon,

I have been following your posts and I have a couple of girlfriends in your age group. They have a lot of the issues you do.

I do admire your energy levels to be able to teach small children and do all of your home repairs and projects. You're also way more involved with your family than I am. You seem to have quite a full life.

Yup Wishful,

I agree with you on the pool of guys out there. I am so much happier to be single than to be with the wrong person. Spent time doing that and it is very draining.

Welcome!  I lurk more than post, but this is a nice community.  I am 38, never married. To be fair, I haven't been actively looking for a partner, but am certainly open to meeting one.

That being said, I just set a goal to attend 3 MeetUp events before the end of the year.  I DO need to bring some new people into my life.

Good idea to do the meetup soconfused,

I participated in a meet up and ride group for mountain biking. It was a lot of fun and there were way more guys than girls. That was when I lived closer to the mountain and was doing a lot of biking. It's a great way to meet lots of people with no pressure, as everyone has an activity to be focused on.
