>>Like my mom said, it's the only bad part of having pets....

Know exactly what you mean. Growing up we had a German Shepherd who was part of the family. And by part of the family I mean she was accorded equal status as any other family member. No less, no more. To our parents she was no less than either of us two brothers, and to us she was the sister we didn't have. Those who have never had pets will find it hard to relate.

And then one day she died. Just like that. She had mild fever for some time and we took her to the vet, and the vet gave her a few shots and prescribed some medicines following which she appeared to be making some progress. But apparently whatever was wrong with her was more serious than we had thought. Her death hit us hard, especially me and I couldn't imagine ever owning a pet again. That was my first experience with the passing of a loved one. I had practically grown up with her. When you bring a pet into your house, be fully aware that one day you will have to bury him/her (unless you are John Gray and your pet is Greyfriar's Bobby).

Oh, I'm sorry. It is so hard to lose a pet, and a really difficult decision to have one put down. (My family and I have had to do that several times). I'm guessing this was a childhood pet as well -- lots of memories wrapped up in that little pooch? It's ok to grieve and be sad - pets are family members as far as I'm concerned. BIG HUGS to you.

(P.S. I'm hoping the Rockies will be playing the Sox in the World Series!).

Yep...he was almost 12, so we'd had him since I was 11.

I had had my last two dogs from the age of 12 (they were sisters - I picked them out and named them) to 25. We had to put one down a year before the other. When I had to say goodbye to the second one on the way to the vet, I truly thought my heart would never recover. They were so much a part of my teenage and early adult years. It's been seven years, and I still sometimes expect to see them come around the corner at my folks' house -- and I still tear up when I think of them.

Just last year, I was finally able to adopt another dog. I dread the day that I will have to say goodbye to her as well. It's one of life's most difficult moments, but I think pets bring so much to our lives that it is worth it.

Hang in there today. It will take time.

I am so sorry to hear about your dog. I, like many others here, know what you're going through and it sucks.

>>I read once that it's sometimes more difficult to lose a pet than a person (in some cases) since pets love you unconditionally and are never critical of you.

For me, it's
