I finally succumbed to it and decided to put a profile on Match. I didn't even really finish the part that I describe myself, as I was getting a little bit fed up of answering and writing things about myself.
I don't have a computer up and running at home currently, so I did it at work. I just did the stuff that was free. I have to pay my mortgage this week and just put new tires on my car, yada yada yada.
So I threw my profile and picture up there yesterday evening after work. I checked my email today. It's funny to see how many people have viewed you and how many have

You don't have to subscribe for 6 months, you can do as little as 3 months or one month. Ive done only one month at a time.
I wouldn't seriously consider someone that takes a week to respond. And I don't take winks alone seriously. What it says to me is that interest level is low, which is a turnoff for me, that you're too busy or aren't going to put in enough effort to get to know me.
You'd have to pay in order to meet someone. You CANNOT communicate on Match without paying so if you really want to meet someon, pay for one month and try it. I did in October and met my current boyfriend who started with a wink, which I almost ignored. But his profile was so good and his initial emails so charming, I had to meet him. I'm delighted that I did. I also have 2 other friends daitng guys they met there and I have a friend that married the man she met there. you never know til you try.
Try it. You've got nothing to lose but $35.
I agree with cl- you have to pay on match to be able to do anything.
Thanks for the excellent advice ladies. I should have asked this question before I put my profile online. Sad as it is, I can't spare $35 until Tuesday. Makes me wonder why I work all the time, and then I remember I have a mortgage and live alone so my monthly outgoings are high anyway.
I will definitely sign up for just a month. I am surprised at how many people have responded. I have all these emails sitting in my inbox and I can't read them. I now feel guilty because it really isn't my personality being reflected at all. I would always take the time to respond.
I will let you know what happened in the end.

I'll let others chime in, but the period before money hits the table, sites I looked at but never joined such as True . . I still get "messages" on a regular basis. When a photo is attached, well lets just say they look a bit different than the real world. (-: Marketing bull excrement . . . LoL
I just thought of another trick I've learned.
