OT: Horrendous landlord - wrap up!!

Hi All,

I know this is off topic, but you guys have been so supportive with my situation..........I felt I just had to share the very last day with the very worst landlord!!

So, when I moved in (4 years ago) the apartment was furnished with a bunch of stuff.  She asked me if I wanted anything and I made a list - small things like a desk, tv. stand, etc.  There was also an older-type throw rug about 4 feet around that I kept - my dog absolutely LOVES this thing, or I would have probably thrown it out by now (it is old and getting threadbare).

So today was D day - anxious about the situation I was up early.  A friend came over to help, and my parents showed up.

So we are carrying everything out and putting it into the van and all of a sudden, the landlord appears.  She says "EXCUSE ME - BUT ARE THOSE MY END TABLES YOÚ'RE TAKING?" (an old coffee table and end tables were also part of the old furniture).  My mom turned around and said - yes, we are - you gave them to Mel, and I was there to witness it (she was).  My landlord then says "NO I DIDN"T!"".  Anyhow, we said we didn't want to argue with her and we took anything she'd given me and put it back in the apartment.  The one exception was the small rug, however, because it was already washed and packed away........it's my dog's favourite thing!!

This is the best part - we finish everything, lock the apartment and leave. We stopped to get coffee quickly and my landlord called me twice - the first message was to say that I had taken her end table (not) and her rug and she wanted me to return them.  The next message said that they were items of her mother's and she wants them back. ??????? If they were so precious, why give them (or at the very least, let a tenant use them?). I did not take her end table - it was all there and my friend took a picture of the apartment with everything in it.

OMG......I am at my parents now for a week, waiting for my new apartment to be painted.........thank goodness!! I guess the argument could be made that there was a misunderstanding, but if she expected this stuff back, why wait until moving day and come out to start accusations? She also still had the list of things she was "giving" me from four years ago.........she wanted a bathroom garbage can back!!

I am SOOO glad to be away from there.........that woman is completely crazy!!! EEEK!!! lol

You know, I'm almost wondering if she's suffering from dementia.  Who tells someone to make a list of all the things they want, then turns around and claims it never happened and even when there were witnesses present?!

Glad you are out of there.  Hope you and your dog love the new place!

Hi,

You may absolutely be right - a lot of people seem to have the same opinion of her.  I guess having to deal with it firsthand, I just see an arrogant, crazy old woman who needs to check herself!!! lol.

Thanks for the positive wishes.........hopefully it can only go up from here..........

Now that you've moved out you probably don't have to keep taking her calls. Eventually she'll either get tired of leaving voicemails or her dementia will kick in and she'll forget why or who she was calling.

Hi,

Yes, I agree.  I hate these "phone calls" so my mom called her back and just basically said that we didn't have anything of hers and to stop calling.  Apparently she was saying that the dehumidifier was there but maybe I "lent it to a friend" (??? - the imaginary dehumidifier!!) lol.

Thank goodness for small wonders..........I guess the situation could have gotten much worse, had I not gotten out of there now.........I think we should all write a book one day...........!!

:smileyhappy:
