OT: Need Another Pep-talk

I start my clinicals Monday.  I'll be working 40 hrs a week for six weeks FOR FREE.  I know it's unavoidable, I'm not the only one having to do it, and it's intended to help me but here's where I'm struggling:  two girls from class who live 45 minutes from their site are going to a site not 20 minutes from me.  When they (instructors) realized that I lived closer, they tried to get them to switch.  I'm assuming that didn't go over well because I found out yesterday that I'll be driving 45 minutes, one way, to do mine - and the best part?  It's open on Sundays - OH JOY!  The crappiest part though, is that the 20 mins away place is hiring.  Why would these girls want to drive that far to work every day(assuming they're hired after their clinicals)?  They live in a much larger city than I, wiith a lot more opportunities and in the same city as the school, so I'd assume they'd have better networking potential.  Plus, they both have families.  I'd think they'd want to be close to their kids in case one gets sick or something?

My mother is encouraging me to go apply for the job but I would feel smarmy doing that . . .

I haven't shared this with anyone at school so I appreciate the opportunity to come here and vent.  I know it doesn't sound like it, but I'm tryng to be positive!

I'd apply for the job! In this market, there's no room for being nice to people you don't care so much about. Who knows- maybe they'll both really suck and someone at the place you're at will have a connection.

First off I do understand your dilemma and yes I would apply for the job... It will be challenging but how long will it last? Look at it as temporary and an investment in your future..

Oh; and stop whining (LOL)... When I went back to school as an adult I had to do 300 hours of free internship while I worked part time at the school for money and guess what else?? I had to raise my son in between all of that.. Dont ask me how I did it but I did..

Not get to work!!!!!!!
LOve Ya.......

Oh, I can be a whiner all right!  I actually feel better now that it's out of my system.  It is what it is . . .

You definitely have to apply for the job--even if those 2 girls applied there is no guarantee that they would be hired anyway, and really it's every woman for herself in a bad job market.  My cousin's DD graduated from college a year ago.  she majored in nutrition but to be a registered dietician, she had to do an internship for a year--and not only didn't she get paid, she had to pay them to let her work in the kitchen of a state mental hospital!  (not that she was cooking the food, but you know what I mean) so 6 wks isn't too bad.  Good luck finding a job.

Update:  one of the girls asked to change to a closer site today stating that it was much too far.  I knew it!  She was the most vocal when they tried to get them to switch with me.  I think the other girl will follow suit.  I like my site and will keep it but I knew something like this was going to happen!
