What do you do when planning a trip with a friend whose accomodation standards are not as high and they are on a tighter budget?  For example, a two star motel vs. a three star hotel with a twelve dollar per night rate increase.  Do you offer to pay the difference?

If it was a difference of only $12/night I would offer to pay it & tell her that I just didn't like the other hotel and since I was being the fussy one that it was worth it to me to pay extra.

I agree with music. The hotel you stay in can make a big difference. It's not worth the $12 a night to be stuck in a bad one!

I don't know how close you are to this friend, but do you feel she would feel bad if you offered to pay the difference?

A couple of times in the past, I had planned to go to a performance with a friend, and she didn't want to pay for the better seats. I bought the tickets, but secretly upgraded us to the better seats. I don't know if you can do that with this friend?

Thanks for the replies.  I am the cheap one with the lower standards in this scenario.  My wallet dictates it, for now.  She offered to pay the difference, but then found an online coupon for the better place so problem solved.

Mix things up a bit and travel to somewhere you haven't been before. You want to go to as many diverse and interesting places while you can on this planet. You might even consider traveling internationally. If you decide you want to travel internationally make sure you get your passport and funds ready, as well as look into the currency exchange rates for different countries.
