"Partner" benefits?

What do you think about companies or states giving benefits that have formerly been reserved for married couples to cohabitants, life partners, long time bf/gfs, etc.? I've been hearing about this in the news lately, but haven't paid much attention to where they are talking about. (I'm at school or I'd try to look more up on it...I should be grading right now!)

Does it leave those of us who are totally single out in the cold? Will it take away from our benefits? Do you think it's right or fair?

I already think single ppl get the short end of the stick for the most part. My present company is EXCLUDED from that...they TRY...but still its hard. My coworker brings his kids to work alot - I've been at my desk eating my lunch on my break and chatting on msn (hey, its my time!). Only to have these kids reading out loud (so coworkers can hear) what is being typed. How annoying! He gets more medical and benefits than I do...and in our situation our salaries are based on whatever money is left over. So if we overspend, no raises that year. I bring in WAY more $ than him but he not only makes more (he has a degree and deserves it) but he also gets way more benefits for his family. And free daycare...we have to take his daughter to the bathroom! But that means less overall $ for us singles to potentially get raises. Its a non-profit so its not the same as a private company.

I've worked in companies where married ppl get two tickets to the event and I only get one. My coworkers have to call in sick b/c bobby or suzie is ill - hey! that means I have to cover two jobs for the day. And I don't get as sick as you, bobby & suzie!

I know it may sound like I am complaining...and in a way I am. Certainly I would hope that if I were a mother, I would have the same considerations...its just hard when you are facing thoughts that you may not become one!

Go.
