Singles events - yea or nay?

I get e-mails from this local singles organization that hosts a variety of singles-only events. Examples:
Nights at the baseball game
Coffee and conversation
Hiking
Lock and Key parties (each woman wears a lock and the guys get keys - the point is to find the fit -- I guess it's supposed to get you to mingle and talk to everyone)
Museum night
Cooking and dinner party
Camping weekend
etc.
I have yet to attend any of these, although some sound like fun, because I have heard that singles-only events are some of the worst places to meet someone because everyone is "desperate." :) I also have this vision of all the men being 15+ years older than the women.
So, have any of you ever tried a singles-only, organized event? How was it? Would you recommend it?

I went to one with a friend once that was sponsored by a singles website she belonged to.
Hi Tall,
Whenever I have gone to events like these, it's usually 90% women. Most desirable guys would rather be boiled in oil than attend a "singles" event...don't know why that is, just seems to be the case.
Some of the events you list sound good though. Perhaps it could at least be a fun night out with other people. And hey, you never know.
