Someone broke into my apartment today

I came home today and my apartment was unlocked. At first I thought I left it that way on accident, but later I remembered locking it. As I looked around my apartment, I found some things that had been moved. Whoever it was was only after valuables and money. They got a necklace and bracelet (from an ex bf) and a pair of earrings that my dad gave me for Christmas (the only real gift he's ever given me). I never would have noticed if the boxes and other things hadn't been moved.

When the police man came, he asked who knew where I kept my cash (since that seemed to be what he was after). There is only one person who has ever seen me get into it. That was P, who I dated briefly last year. He followed me one day and wouldn't get out of the room. I don't think he did it. (There was no cash in the apt) Whoever it was had a key b/c the door wasn't broken. I think it was someone from maintenance. I've called the office, but I have to wait for them to get back to me. I thought about asking them to change the locks, but if it's a maintenance person, he'll have a key no matter what.

It's times like this that I really wish Joe were here. I went upstairs to a friend's apartment just to warn her, and she asked me to stay for dinner. I stayed for a few hours and talked w/ her and her husband. They offered to let me stay there tonight, but I don't think it would help me at all. I have to stay here sometime.

I'm just freaking out a little bit right now!

sorry to hear about the break in. whoever breaks in to your apartment can come back again. there's one thing you can do. install a new lock yourself, but you might have to check your lease on that. anyways, *hugs*

Oh, Shy, I'm so sorry to hear that. It's a horrible feeling, isn't it? And I'm very sorry that whoever it was took things that had sentimental value to you.

I'm sorry to hear, also, that it was probably an inside job. I hope the management will address that.

Thank you everyone. I'm making a new rule right now. No more bad things can happen to me this year.

I'm handling this quite well, actually. I'm pretty surprised at myself. I think the fact that they took jewelry that I never wear has made it easier. If they had taken my tv, stereo, or computer, I'd be MAD. It was nice to have nice jewelry, but I can live without it. I did have a panickey feeling when I first realized it was missing b/c I wasn't sure what all was taken, but I think it was only those three things.

They are going to change my locks today, and if it was maintenance, that should deter them from doing it again. If it does happen again, it'll be too obvious. If it was an old tenant, changing the locks will work. Either way, I'll still feel safer.

Thanks for all the hugs. I needed them.

Thanks, Real. I realized another necklace missing tonight. My mother gave it to me when I graduated high school. I didn't want to tell her about it b/c I knew she'd be freaking out, but I had to b/c I needed to know what it was worth for the police.

It's starting to sink in a little more tonight. I'm actually rather ticked. Somebody thought they had the right to come into MY apartment and take MY stuff. Let me tell ya, if they ever find out who it was and I can talk to him, there may be some words spoken that I don't usually say.

Hugs to you, Shy. I'm sorry to hear about the break-in. Changing the locks is good; have you thought about an alarm system as well?
