It does, but just bringing your heart rate up won't burn that many calories other than those spent in powering the heart and a few leg muscles under light to moderate stress. The body's readily available fuel for normal workloads is stored in the liver in the form of glycogen. Glycogen comes from the carbs we eat. It's easiest to use and is the body's first source of fuel. If we skip a couple of meals and all the glycogen is spent, the body will next turn to breaking down protein (muscle tissue) for energy. Protein metabolism produces foul smelling ketones and you will know this is happening when your breath turns foul, usually after a period of starvation.
The last and the least preferred source of fuel to the body is fat. It's least preferred because it's the hardest to utilize, even though it's densely packed with energy making it best suited for long term storage.
My point was light/moderate exercise like jogging/treadmill will burn calories alright, but not so much the calories stored as fat under your skin. There are plenty of calories available in the liver (glycogen) for that. It may even prevent fat deposition by burning away calories before they can be converted to fat. But to get the body to tap into its fat reserves takes a lot more than that. Is it possible to do that on a treadmill ? Yes, everything is possible. But it's not realistic or practical unless you plan on running several hours everyday. Resistance training is a much faster way to accomplish quick weight loss. A single muscular contraction against stiff resistance could equal..I don't know, running several hundred yards ? Not sure about the numbers but the body will quickly deplete most of its glycogen and turn to its fat reserves under such demand. But the best part is-- fat metabolism continues even AFTER a workout session( in order to replenish glycogen for its short term needs). Bottom line -- nothing like intense weight training (along with diet) for quick fat loss.
(Did I type too many words ? :) )

I hate to do it but I do have to agree with hillaryh8tr, I do exercise tapes and they incorporate weight lifting and cardio and although I may not lose a lot of weight off the scale I have lost a phenomenal amount of inches off especially my waist. A total of 35 inches off my total body since July. It really does make you lose faster than just cardio alone.
But just cardio is better than nothing.

Which is true. Cardio alone won't do it all. You can't do one without doing the other. When I workout I use a mix of cardio and weight training.

I am in NE too - and this morning it was so warm, I was way overdressed for my run.
I generally layer some technical shirts, and then a fleece if it's cold enough.
Seriously.
Ha!
