What does it mean to talk about life? I assume it has to do with things that you care about deeply. It feels so good when you can speak to a sympathetic listener, like the woman from last night or the volleyball guy from last week, about your dreams, problems, conflicting feelings and so on.

I guess I have a rough idea of what it means, but can you guys be more specific?

Talking about life has always been a bit philosophical for me...like what is our purpose? Is our destiny predetermined? Etc etc. It's the kinda stuff you don't ponder everyday but that's important to reflect on.

When people talk about life they usually discuss the aim and purpose of it based on their own experiences and the lessons they have learned. Here are some random thoughts that have taken on more meaning as I have got older:

- Life's too short
- If you roll around in the muck of the past you will never get clean
- Life is what happens to you whilst you are busy making other plans
- Feel the fear and do it anyway
- No matter how bad you think the now is you will one day be taking a nostalgic look back.

This one shocked and surprised me because when I heard it I never thought it would happen, but it did!

- One day, for no particular reason, you fill find yourself reading the obituaries at the back of the newspaper.

Hmm, unlike you guys, I did not intend anything so difficult like the purpose or meaning of life. While I do have an opinion, I do not like to discuss it because someone always tries to tell me what to do with my life....

Talking about life experiences and lessons sounds like a good idea, but for me it is hard to get into that kind of discussion, especially with a stranger or new friend. I am an introvert and sometimes I actually do not want or care about people. But now that I am older, I want to start knowing people more intimately. This is a learning experience for me. Hope you guys can help!

When I talk about "life", I talk about where I've been, where I am and where I hope to go. Meaning and destiny and that stuff is about a once-a-year thing for me. I like to talk about my previous experiences, the friendships I've had, the meaningful people in my life, the accomplishments I've attained and the failures I've paddled through to get me where I am now. I like to talk about my schooling, my family situations, my friendships, my boyfriend. I like to talk about my future, where I want to live, what I want to do in my career, who I want to love (current boyfriend), future children, travels, housing, retirement.

Sharing yourself with others takes trust and practice. You'll get the hang of it eventually, if you're open minded about it.
