We were talking about "McMansions" in my Urban Sprawl post and some of you guys were wondering where that expression came from.

I haven't looked at the wikipedia article yet but my take on McMansions is that they're cheaply built, large status homes that all look alike and that sit on tiny plots of land.

We have a lot of McMansions here in the St. Louis suburbs. GREAT big houses on LITTLE BITY plots of land.

Just another status symbol.

I miss the house of my youth - old ranch style house that sat on a HUGE yard with a great big maple tree to climb.

It's funny, I just blogged about this on Monday. There are several of these communities sprouting up all over our beautiful farm land. There are four being built within a four mile strip of highway. They tore down two houses which were well over a hundred years old. One of which, a friend was renting. It was owned by a nearby church and they sold the plot to the developer. She had 30 days to get out. It was a cute white farm house. I miss seeing it . . . Progression, whattaya gonna do?

Precisely.

That kills me. Why would someone pay $800K for a house that you can look out your windows directly into your neighbor's house? Give me more land, less house!

>Give me more land, less house!<

Me too. I can't see spending that much money on a house with no yard. I want that great big yard with the great big oak or maple tree. Something the kids can run around in.

Maybe that's why all the young kids have serious weight problems nowadays? No yards?

Ooh, I want to play! Love the yellow house btw. Cute!

I can't afford either of these now but maybe someday: ($200 K, 1300 & 1800 sq. feet)

Ohhh...I LOVE that 2nd one!

One of my best friends is a builder and I told her I want this:

It's really more of a hunting cabin, but the floorplan is just an open greatroom with a loft. I'd add first floor bedroom and bathroom, though. The plan is something like $30,000 for what I want. With land, wiring, plumbing, etc., I could get in for around $110 or so.

Wow, that's not bad . . . I kept scrolling through the pics. They construct some gorgeous homes! I'm like you, give me a couple thousand square feet and I'm good to go. Heck, I lived in a 725 sq. foot condo for almost five years!
