They just assume...

Sometimes the things people assume about us because we're single really bug me! What is the most annoying thing someone has assumed about you, just because you're single?

I probably didn't react the best today to one. I hate it when people assume I can't cook because I don't have a family. Today was a food day at school. After my coworker tasted my meatballs, she commented, "You're becoming quite the cook." I probably just should have said thanks, but I've been cooking since I was ten. So I just said that I always have been. She was miffed. But she's like that. Everyone always assumes I just don't cook because there isn't a man in my house! It's annoying.

What's even funnier to me is that she thinks I need help picking out a man, but the fact that I finally fixed my own oven didn't shock her at all. It's like because I'm not needy, I need men forced upon me!

Don't you just love it when people assume that you should be happy to get any single man in your age group, as if you shouldn't be able to have someone who suits your own taste?

oh I totally agree with ya shywon! :) I had a cousin that used to do that same thing with me. She would pick put some random guy and I was suppose to fall for him. I stopped hanging out with her for that reason. Now I have a coworker that tries to set me up! I finally had to tell another coworker to talk to her and tell her to stop! I have no problem finding men!

I have a married friend who was searching the bar for cute guys for me Saturday night. It ticks me off that she thinks I can't- or wasn't- doing that myself! I told her that if I noticed anyone I really wanted to talk to, I would make it happen. What she is oblivious to is the looks I get and return all the time. The guy standing right in front of us stared me down and smiled when I returned from the bathroom. He turned out to be obnoxious and we kind of got him kicked out, but there could have been others. It was just really crowded and I find it harder to cruise for men that way. Just because I'm single, that doesn't mean I'm unable to attract and choose my own men!

Excellent thread! Some people really assume there is something wrong with us for being single, that there must be a reason for it other than that we have not met the right one yet. The absolute worst for me must be the couple of persons who have asked if I am a lesbian. I mean, come on! Nothing wrong with that at all, but if I were, I would definitely have let people know many years ago! Only a few weeks ago a colleague asked me if I was sure I am not lesbian. I replied that I have always liked guys, but never had much luck with them. Yes, I have always been slightly "tomboyish" in a way, but still not lesbian.... All this while being on the train, total strangers probably listening!

No I don't think this works if you actually hate your spouse or if he's abusive or for people who are having affairs.

Ironically though these are people who have been married 30 yrs or so and very unlikely they will end up divorced.

Most of the women I know with kids are that way. I've read plenty of research that says you should put your marriage/husband before kids to make it last, but apparently the majority of people reading that research are single.
