Those lovely Christmas parties

Mine is tomorrow. I was kind of pressured into going when I'd really rather not. Everyone was a little irritated that dinner was $30 for something pretty simple (that's expensive around here). One of the two people hosting is my unstable colleague I've posted about before. If I had told her I didn't want to go, I would have had my head bitten off! Apparently, she has all of this elaborate stuff planned. Most of us would just rather sit and socialize, not deal with structured games and stuff. I overheard that she was even going to make us draw tables to determine where to sit and who to sit with. I think my principal was going to put a stop to that.
So my plan is to go, have dinner and maybe a drink, then leave with a friend to meet another friend for more drinks! Let's hope my plan goes off without incident.
How do you get through those lovely parties you don't want to attend?

That is how ours went. Employees only, at the office. Lunch & then cookies in the afternoon with coffee.
It was fine.
I agree, Music -- I think a lunch Christmas party would be much more appropriate for the employee-only parties.
I think if they have one of those employee only type of parties, it should be lunch or get out of work early--not after hours.
I always have a reason why I need to leave at a certain time-call me anti social but if I don't, I'll get roped in to being there all night.
This strikes me as one of those sad rituals that we do as a culture that are disassociated from warmth or meaning.
My DH's company is incredibly anti-spouse/family friendly.
If the hostess asks me if I had fun or comments at all about how I didn't look like I was having fun, I'll probably tell her what happened, leaving out the part where I knew who it was that told them to move.
Yuck!
Today I'm trying to get some projects done and get my house cleaned.
