Walking back tonight from the library, I heard a little toddler make that shrieking noise they do and its mother's voice say sternly, "Shut up!"

I personally don't get why "shut up" is so much worse than "be quiet" or just shushing the kid, but that's just me.

Yeah, I've seen plenty of babies sleep.

58 is freezing cold? Wow! I have kids taking off jackets at recess cause they're hot at that temperature. He should have been wearing shoes, though.

Everyone's normal language in their house is different. I don't say shut up to my class because it does have a disrespectful tone even though the meaning is the same. However, many of them are accustomed to it at home and say it to each other all the time.

I guess what I'm saying is that not everyone's standards for respect are the same. The kids' parents may very well say it to them regularly. Heck, the kid may not even have had shoes. When you're teaching small kids, you learn that there is a very wide range of what some people consider acceptable.
