Vacation envy
Wed, 06-26-2013 - 11:26am

It happens every year about this time: everyone goes on vacation. I have no vacation plans this year, and it's mainly because I don't want to go alone. I have the money and the time, just no one to go with.

I'm going to be cat sitting for an older couple I know in a couple of weeks. They're going to visit Maine and stay in several bed and breakfast inns along the way, then head into Canada. I'm so jealous. I'd love to have a SO to do that with! And then there's Facebook--positively rife with photos of Paris, the Bahamas, etc.

Yes, I have traveled alone, and I don't like it. I have also traveled with groups with mixed results (in terms of fun), the last one being unpleasant. I've looked into several "learning" type vacations, and that's a possibility. I've also considered attending a professional seminar and taking a few extra days after the seminar--at least I could write it off.

Oh, there are a couple of girlfriends I could possibly do something with, but it's problematic. One really can't get away for long because of childcare issues, the other one can't much get away from her job (she's a workaholic), plus doesn't want to share a room, which I find a little odd. A third friend truly has no money. And the rest I don't really know well enough to travel with. And that's about it.

I always say I'm going to plan ahead for June so I don't have to endure this left out feeling, but then, it's just really hard to make it happen. Last year I took two whole vacations that were really just long weekends. For one, I went to visit a friend who I hadn't seen in a while, and honestly, I felt like she had moved on and was not very happy to see me. Plus there was a power failure the entire weekend. The other friend I visited when I went to pick up my new kitten in Atlanta. She lives out in the boondocks and really can't leave her house for long because of a business she runs from home. It was frankly boring and she talks non-stop about her problems. What was I thinking?

So I'll just whine a little more. What I would REALLY like to do is rent an old-style beach house for a week near Sanibel Island on the gulf with a man. You know, go swimming, cook some meals, go out for meals, drink wine on the deck, visit a few homey tourist destinations, collect shells and know. Not the same with a girlfriend.

Oh, I want to snap out of it and just freaking do something, but it's hard to get motivated. Anyone else feel this way?

I have vacation envy but it's because I have no money to go on vacation--I have girlfriends I could go with, plus my  kids.  I was out w/ a couple of friends recently.  One of my friends is from Brazil & she's a teacher so she is going home for the summer.  so my other friend says "Hey, let's go to Brazil next summer.  Or let's go to the DR."  So I'm like "yeah, that would be nice" but my financial situation right now is that I can't afford to go anywhere good this summer.  I'll be lucky if I can take a weekend away & take my son somwhere, like NYC-I was thinking of going to Baltimore again to visit DD but he didn't seem that interested.  That was my big vacation last summer--2 nights in Baltimore.  Still with the plane fare for 2, plus hotel, it still wasn't cheap.  I am even jealous of my DD--she went to Florida earlier this year, just went on a beach weekend w/ her BF and is going to a wedding in the Hamptons.  Plus she will come up here to MA in July to see family & friends and while here will go to the beach too--the way she works in 12 hour shifts, she can take several days off in a row w/o even taking vacation days.

Oh I stayed at the island next to Sanibel, which I can't remember the name of.  There is a really nice resort there.  I went with my friend and we loved the resort--beautiful pools and right on the beach, but the only thing was that at night there was absolutely nothing to do after dinner, so that part was pretty boring.  My last good vacation was with this friend about 2 yrs ago when we went to the Bahamas.  I don't really care about having a man to go on vacation with, but I probably wouldn't go alone either.

I think every person I know has been to Disney World this summer with their kids. Not that I'd want to do that alone, but I'd like to be the one watching my kids get excited about it. I mentioned to my youngest sister that I'd like to save to take my niece next summer, but I don't know if that'll happen or not. My problem isn't just that I don't have anyone to go on vacation with. I can't really afford it either. With two houses to maintain, I try to keep enough saved for emergencies so that's where any of my saved money goes. My "vacation" this summer is going to be bringing my 4 year old nephew up to stay with me for a few days and spending time doing fun stuff with him. His mom is apprehensive about letting him go away without her, but hopefully it'll work out okay.

I'm going to Chattanooga for three days in July with ma bestie and we're driving of course.  I really, really wanted to go to the beach but that wasn't realistic considering I'm brizzoke.  I won't complain though because I haven't taken any semblance of a vacay in four years.  At least it's something.  I hope you can make something happen.

Cfk_3 - I think you will really like Chattanooga.  I went there a few years ago for my birthday & had a lot of fun.  If you take the incline railway to the top of Lookout Mtn, it's one heck of a view.  The view is gorgeous.  There's also a cute little restaurant across from the Chattanooga ChoCho hotel called The English Rose.  It's like having tea in England right in Tennessee lol.  There's an art district there as well, but I didn't have time to venture to that side when I was there last.  I hope to do that next time.

But in regards to vacations this time of year in general, I'm too broke to travel lol.  Sad, but true.  I'm in the same boat as you guys.  I had to use my tax refund to pay for moving out of my old apartment and into another place + moving expenses and paying two rents took all of my refund.  So a vacation is a no go this year.  It sucks but that's reality.  Kinda makes me sad when I get these emails from Groupon Getaways and seeing all these wonderful places that I'd like to go to.  But there's no money!  Maybe next year I may go on vacay.  Just depends on how the finances look.

Thanks, Wish . . . I have been to the acquarium but that was it.  I love art so you have me stoked . . . We're going to Lookout Mt. too ;)

I hope you guys can at least get in a day trip or something, somewhere . . . It stinks being broke.  As it does not being able to secure a travel buddy . . .

Vacation? What is that?? I say though if you have the money do something.... You need to recharge and its healthy to get a nice break.. You can figure it out but yes I know what you mean about the facebook thing. It is sickening when I see all the people going away with their SO and all.. So I let it sting me for a minute and then I dont dwell in that space too long.. I find something more positive to do and list all of the things I have and am grateful for.. It works all the time..

I dont like going on vacations alone and i have done that but yes that gets old.. If I did have some money though I would find a  group or yes do a hostel or something or a tour operator. You will meet people and feel way better.. Take yourself out of the funk and then be grateful that you had the health, money and time to go away...When you get back you will probably have new friends and a host of great things to share and talk about.

Just get going and make plans for something and the rest will fall into place.

CFK.. Have a great time.. I have been where you are going and its awesome and it was gorgeous.. The scenery and all is priceless ..Let us know what new things you found..

Hey guys.. Even if you can take a drive or get away for a day here and there is better than nothing and that cost is relatively cheap.

take care
