Where do you belong?

I've been thinking about maybe joining something new- a group, organization, etc., but I'm a little hesitant.

>>Isn't it funny how we look at the pictures to tell if it's going to be a good group or not?
A tad shallow, I admit, but for instance, the organization I work, most of our events are full of little old ladies (occasionally their husbands) who are there for the food. :) Lovely people, I'm sure, but not my kind of crowd.
I've been feeling similar to how you feel lately...I'm so eager to meet new people (ANY people, not just single men) and get involved, but I don't know in what. I volunteered for a presidential campaign in 2004, but they wanted me to call people and I just didn't want to do that, haha. I'm interested in politics, but a little frustrated with the system, so I have no idea...
I don't like calling people either, especially if it's not an solicited phone call.
>>I say I'm not political, but I do have very strong opinions on certain things (parenting, social responsibility, children, education, etc.) but no outlet for them. I feel a little stifled at times. I need to let them out!
Same here, but what bothers me the most is this black and white mentality: this is liberal thinking, this is conservative, and you HAVE to pick one! How in the WORLD can everyone's political beliefs be pigeonholed into a mere TWO whole categories?? Some of my thinking is liberal (social issues mostly) and some leans moderate/conservative. But I don't want to be apathetic, so I HAVE to pick one, which ends up being liberal because I just believe social issues are more important than, say financial issues. One of clearly less informed and shallow college roommates was voting Republican because, and I quote, "I know I'll be making money someday and I want to keep it." I'm completely fine if you choose to vote Republican, but please JUSTIFY it with something better than that!! Some people will need your millions of dollars more than you!
Another bit of info that comes from working in fundraising: I don't remember the exact statistics, but middle class households typically donate the highest proportion of their income. THIS is what bothers me about people like Paris Hilton (let's see if she actually acts on her jailhouse epiphanies).
Who says you have to pick one?
I also volunteer with a local charity called Santa Clause Anonymous, and with a sailing group. Most cities also have "young professionals" groups.

I am not currently involved with any organizations, but I have worked on Habitat sites in the past. The best part: POWER TOOLS! Who knew these "toys" could be so much fun? There was great energy on the site as well; just a wonderful group of people.
Have you thought about calling some homeless shelters for women? Maybe they would benefit from having someone organize activities for the children there. I don't know how you feel about the elderly, but I would imagine that some area nursing homes would be open to something like that as well.
Have you ever thought about starting your own group?
>>I belong to a running club and they can be lots of fun. New and interesing people - mine is the Hash House Harriers - there's a club in almost every city in the world. It's a little like a fraternity for adults, but its open to everyone with an open mind!
This sounds interesting, even though I currently suck at running...where'd you find out about it?
Appartently, not a popular topic around here and to each his own but... what about church? You get into a good church and you will have activities galore to pick from! Let alone going to small group classes where you'll "belong" and maybe met people in your same situation... who share your strong opinions!?
I seem to recall you aren't atheist by any means but you aren't really into church/God!? Is that right?
Well... I'm reading a fabulous book right now called "Soul Cravings" and basically what it states is that God put a craving in all of us... but the only thing that satisfies the craving is HIM! So search if you must... join organizations or volunteer groups - I'm not saying those are bad things to do! But if you find your soul is still craving to belong but you can't figure out "to what"... maybe one day you'll just give the book a try and see what it's all about!?

Church has a stigma these days of being an "institution" caught up in religious absurdities. But I think "church" is what we make of it... and if you want church to be a place where you can meet people, belong and if you find God along the way... GREAT!
You're right- I'm not aethist at all, but I'm not into going to church.
