Where do you belong?

I've been thinking about maybe joining something new- a group, organization, etc., but I'm a little hesitant.

Yes! I agree with you completely. I'd like to belong to something again - be part of a group/community where I feel welcomed and feel like a part of something. I was in choir and such in high school and college, and it really felt like another family.
I looked at the jaycees here, but from the photos on the Web site, it looked like the same 5 people show up to everything. Like you, I'm looking for something a little more organized and bigger than that.
I don't really belong to any groups here. There's a group that does a monthly networking event -- I go occasionally, but I never feel like anyone really connects as a group. It's too random. I am about to join a board for another group - a cause I really care about, but also geared to young professionals. I'm sort of hoping it will be the group I'm seeking. If it's not, the work will at least be worth the time spent.

>>I'd love to join a choir, but there's only one I could find and I think it's more of a committment than I could handle at the moment. <<
I joined a community choir here a few years ago. I was the youngest by at least 25 years! Everyone had been in it for 15+ years, and they really weren't very welcoming to newcomers. It was fun to sing again (I REALLY miss singing), but it wasn't the experience I had hoped for.

I kinda felt the same way about the choir I looked up.
Like another poster said a few days ago - I guess they might have grandsons they could introduce you to...
but I'm looking for a better social life in general. More female friends around my age would be nice.

I definitely get a lot of my sense of belonging from my singing group--TOO much so at times because it's a huge time commitment (rehearsals 2x a week, 3 hours per rehearsal, plus concerts and recordings) and the director doesn't understand that all of us have lives beyond the group because he doesn't, LOL. So I periodically have to take breaks but I do miss singing when I'm not. It's the most techically advance and challenging group I've ever sung with but also the most rewarding in many ways.
I met my best friend through the group (along with several other friends and numerous acquaintances) and the singing connection was how I got invited to go on my trip to Turkey recently.
Our group is a bit unusual in that we have a HUGE range of ages from 20-80 (our oldest member just celebrated 80 last Sunday and we did/are doing concerts last weekend and this, which include his favorite piece of a cappella choral music as a tribute to him, Poulenc's Figure Humaine, which is very challenging but a joy to sing.
If anyone's interested in hearing us (there are sample files on the group's website), send me an email.
