Who cares about Valentine's Day?

I just got an email from EHarmony with a link to an article called "10 reasons to be happy you're single on Valentines Day".  The reasons were kind of lame except the one that was something like you don't have to give in to the commercialism of the holiday, which I think is true.  I don't care that I'm single on V-day, I don't feel sad when I see the ads to get Val. gifts, roses, or whatever--to me it's just another day.  I think I'd be sadder not to have a date if I was going to a special occasion, a wedding or sometimes when I go dancing and there are way more single women than men.  I feel kind of bad for men who are in relationships because it seems like the gift giving is geared way more toward men buying things for  women--jewelry, roses, lingerie. There's not much that you can traditionally buy a man except candy.

My excitement for V-day this year is that my DD is coming home for the weekend--I haven't seen her since Thanksgiving.  Both her father & my mother have birthdays over the weekend.

Obviously, it would be nice to have a special someone to share Valentine's Day with, but I'm not troubled by it and haven't been for a long time. The first few years after my divorce it was like a punch in the gut, but then, so was Christmas, New Years, Thanksgiving, etc. I do think Valentine's Day is overly commercial, so it's not like I'm longing for a bracelet from Kay Jewelers or anything.

And, I hate those articles about "why it's better to be single."

Yes, sometimes you know they are really searching for some thing, like it's better to be single compared to being in a abusive relationship.  yeah, no kidding.  Or you can eat all the candy by yourself in your PJs watching whatever movie you want--really, is that supposed to be heartwarming?  How about the reality for some women would be they are sitting in their PJs eating the candy & watching The Notebook while crying their eyes out cause they don't feel like they will ever meet a nice guy.  lol

I thought I was going to open this and you were going to continue with:  " . . . When you're under several feet of snow."

I haven't cared about Valentines Day in forever.  I think I've completely detached from the idea of love for the time being . . . There are fleeting moments but they are very few and far between.

Oh how I hate snow!  I really can't complain that much since we didn't lose power but I was going a little crazy being stuck in the house for 2 days and it really took a long time to shovel out.  thankfully my neighbor across the street came over at the end to help get my car out.  Today it's raining so I really hope it doesn't freeze up overnight--I am more worried about my son driving since he doesn't have any experience driving in snow.

Ha!  I learned winter driving in the wet Michigan snow.  When I was traveling in the West where there is powder snow it was a revelation.  Powder has very little moisture and traction is nonexistant.  Very different this coming from a person who drove tested cars with slicks in snow!

I tried to respond to you yesterday and it didn't take. Grrr... Anyway, I think Valentine's Day is stupid. Apparently even my iPad doesn't think it's a real holiday because it doesn't automatically capitalize it or put the apostrophe in. I think it's even dumber that we celebrate it with a party at school. It really doesn't mean much to me. I'd much rather a guy make me feel special all the time.

Okay folks I will def. put a damper on Valentines Day.. It is actually a satanic pagan holiday so we are safe since we cant celebrate it..

Oh; and its also Hallmark who makes a fortune too.......................

I have seen some singles events doing anti valentines day single events.. I want to go to one next week because its actually in a preserve and it is affordable and its just sort of a mingle get together for singles..

Do kids in elementary school still exchange those little valentines cards that they get in the drug store?  I think that's cute (of course only when they give one to every one).  Now it's just going to the store & seeing huge aisles of candy that of course will go on sale the next day and then they will be putting out Easter candy.

Yes, they do. It just seems like an odd holiday to celebrate in elementary school. It's just part of the commercialization of it all.

Valentines day is too commercial for me. I love the day after when everything goes on 50-70% off. That is the best time to stock up for next years celebrations if you need those cards for kids to give out at school.

Also all those decorations that go on sale are awesome to use during the year in romantic situations (minus the ones that say happy valentines day) with all the red hearts, sprinkles, candles etc that can spruce up a romantic dinner any time of the year.
