Why do people burn bridges?

I have a friend who had a job prospect that she felt was a sure thing. And, from what it sounds like, the recruiter made it sound like she was going to get the job. She got an email from the company today saying that they had filled the position with someone else, but said the usual....we'll keep your resume on file, etc.

I recently got a job with an organization that had turned me down 3 years ago! And by knowing those people (2 people in particular) and networking since then, it has made a huge difference in my success today. You never know! It's true we should treat people nicely (even when we're upset) and never burn bridges.

Deirdre
In any business dealing, that cooling off period is critical. You never want to burn any bridge -- even if you think you're sure you'll never use it again. I've been surprised in my career at how many of those bridges overlap, and it can kill you if you tick off the wrong person.
For your friend, I hope she sees it as a learning experience. Next time she's upset, she should vent to a friend - not the recruiter.
AJ, enjoying life with C.
Unfortunately, I don't think my friend learned a lesson from it.
