I think it's because they are terrified of being alone and there's this crazy belief that ALL women are like that, so they don't think they'd ever find anyone better.
I dont think these people are mentally stable nor healthy.. and I would include the man and the woman.. I believe that couples set up strange relationship dynamics and then they find it hard to let go of it.. Habits, comfort and knowing someone x amount of years makes it more challenging to let go no matter if the person is psycho or non psycho. Its like they get used to being together and its just life as usual...
I am also a believer of some people just belong together no matter what ..They are two of a kind and feed off of each other;s nuttiness.

Reminds me of this married guy that my friend had this on & off affair with.
A man would NOT leave his wife for another woman, even if he's miserable at home. Although there are exceptions.
Musiclover's story reminds me of Vicky Cristina Barcelona
There are many many men who leave their wives for other women, mostly w/o their wives' agreement--just look at the divorce board.
Ya know, I asked "Ryan" why he stays if the marriage is so bad he calls me at night, crying in his car parked at the end of their block.
