Well I've heard of a few situations (on the news or even a personal one) where women who camped alone with other women or children have had scary issues happen. I think it's more of a security issue for me. It has nothing to do about a guy doing better then a woman. It's about the safety. I would feel unsafe in a camping enviroment with just my two little girls. Lots' of weirdos in the world. But that is just my thoughts.
ETA: I take my children camping once or twice a year, but in a group enviroment or last year with my XF and his kids when we tents are involved. However if I have been alone with them, it was in a cabin I can lock.
That is so much fun - glad to hear you and DS had a great time. Nic and I are still talking about our trip to the wild wild west this summer. He was asking me in the beginning when we were buying stuff at Target but not checked into the campsite yet, "MOM,why would you want to sleep in a place with no electricity and no refrigerator - what are we doing with a cooler with ice for the food??" And to that I replied,"I cannot tell you, I have to show you."
And on the first night when he gathered wood and built his first fire and whittled his own marshmallow stick, then he understood. And I think it did us good not to have the internet, the video games or the TV anywhere near us. We really connected and had a great week.
As to the safety issue - I camped a lot in my 20s when I lived out west. Never once felt afraid. This time around we were in a national park campground surrounded by families and a lot of people. Felt safe to me, even in bear country. We met some wonderful people from all over the world. We ended up spending the last 3 days in a cabin because it snowed - and DS was so bummed to leave our tent. But he wants to do it again so we probably will. Camping made our trip so so cheap. But it is a matter of what you are used to - you could still go to the mountains and rent a cheap cabin and lock the door, too. I could call that camping as well.
If I avoided doing things because of the possible dangers (of which my mother reminds me, there are LOTS of), well then I would just sit at home all day!
It was just a sincere question and not meant to offend. I don't sit at home either and twiddle my thumbs either. I wouldn't consider myself overly cautious, but as a single mother, I do avoid certain things. Another example is that I never drive in the middle of the night with my girls anywhere. I'm off the road by 10pm. And don't leave the earlier then 4am to drive long distance. Just in case of a flat tire or my car broke down. If I didn't have cell phone coverage in BFE that could cause a situation that I would really want to avoid. Maybe it also just depends on where you live. I never worried about it as much in Germany as I do here. But a man tried to break into my oldest DD's room 6 weeks after we arrived in the States. Police never caught the guy but someone else in that apartment complex did a few months after we left (the police thought because the guy lived in the building adjacent to us and had a straight view to my daughters room that it was the same guy). Alex never got a really good description of who he was. I moved shortly thereafter and at that time we lived on the ground floor in a great apartment complex. As a single mom, I probably won't do that again. We now live on the second floor with an alarm system and the children now feel safer. Maybe because I have girls, I'm just more worried and also because I had my own issue as a teenager. I think I mentioned that a few months back. Anyway, I'm sorry if I offended you.

Wowee!
If I had those results every time I went camping, I'd probably love it!
As it is, I'm not overly fond of it, but that sounds like one heck of a park ranger.
I can't help but giggle- anytime I think of a park ranger, I think of 'the man in the yellow hat' from all of the Curious Geroge books as a child.

Is that THE cutest thing?
R~ (who is re-thinking this camping thing! lol)
Rebecca, Mom to Averey, 2/8/00, Kibo, Sana & Zuri too!
That is SOOO cool! You sound a lot like me! Everyone thinks I am much younger then I am and I can pretty much meet anyone anywhere. LOL.
Just a question. Do you ever get nervous or scared camping alone with only your son?
I would love to take the girls and myself, but I am too scared to do it with just us girls and no male.
Any one else have those thoughts? Or am I being silly?
WOW! What a nice suprise that was!
Emma (definitely re-thinking the camping thing, LOL)
