Good for you, Rebecca, for saying something about the title of the dance.

I think you have a point--it should be called a Sweetheart dance or something to that effect so that noone feels put out.

I'm a little on the fence about whether I agree or disagree its not out of line. I've come across this numerous times as well with my DS (who is 5) as his school will have "Father's Day" celebrations, "Build a birdhouse with Dad" celebrations etc. While I do feel his loss that all his little buddies have their dad's there and he does not (he's the only kid in his class of 11 who doesn't not have a father to do these things with) It was stressed that if Dad wasn't available, to bring an Uncle, family friend etc. Well, turns out we don't have those either (Mr. RCMP hasn't met my kids yet, so that's not an option right now) but what I do is keep Caleb home on those occasions. Granted he is younger than your daughter, he definitely is aware and understands his friends all have dads, but he doesn't. And he misses them. However I didn't see the point of expresses this in the way of stopping these father/child activities as I believe they are important. If my brother lived close by, I'd love for him to fill in and take DS, but like I said we don't even have that option, so he stays home. And doesn't really care/notice that he's missing out. Where as I suppose Avery being older would be fully aware what she's missing out. I guess its not helpful, but what I'm saying is, I don't feel its unfair persay to have these types of father/child activites within a school. I do feel for your daughter tho. Very much.

holy smokes I typed that out too quickly and only now see the spelling/grammar errors LOL sorry. basically bottom line of what I was saying was, was it specifically expressed only fathers & daughters? or can she bring an uncle, family friend? Yes it is true now a days many families are not intact, or they are but fathers travel a lot with their jobs and such. But I still think its great to have father/daughter or father/child specific activies that while they may say "FATHER/daughter" bringing an uncle or friend is encouraged/expected for those families that "dad isn't in the picture"
