Doing it ALONE . . . .

West's post about going to see Alfie alone (I go see foreign flicks alone - I don't have anyone who enjoys going to see them) and others' responses to her seeing the movie alone and my going out to dinner alone (I love this little French bistro that has the most amazing crepes) kind of made me think . . . .
Have you gone to the movies alone?
Besides when travelling for business, have you ever went to lunch or dinner at a sit down REAL restaurant (I'm not talking McDonald's here!) alone?
Have you ever taken a "fun" class (like cooking or wine tasting or dance, etc.) alone?
ANYTHING that you've done alone - share your experience.
Is there something you have always REALLY wanted to do but have never done because you didn't have someone to go with you? WHAT?
Would you accept a challenge? If there is something you've always wanted to do - but didn't because you didn't have anyone to do it with - would you commit to doing it ALONE BEFORE January 31, 2005? Tell us what it is, and then report all about it???

I'm glad that my challenge has you thinking!
Go to New York alone or with parents / I'd personally choose to go with my parents over going alone - - - BUT - - - if I didn't have anyone to go with - I'd start saving my pennies and I'd go alone. I have no fear, at all, of travelling alone. I know others do - I don't. Naive, possibly. But oh well. I'm not missing out on doing things I want to do just because I don't have anyone to go with.
The thing isn't doing it alone just to say "I did it by myself!" it's to do it - whether you have someone to go with or not - so when you are on your death bed you don't say "I always wanted to go to New York City but never did because I could never find anyone to go with me!"

I used the death bed analogy when deciding whether I would get divorced. I said to myself, when I am on my death bed would I rather be able to say 'well at least I never got divorced' or 'I did what was right for me and was happy.' Once I thought of it that way, I had made my decision.
I think I will make a resolution to go to NYC sometime in 2005, either by myself or with someone. That will give me time to save the money to do it right.
Incidentally, my resolution for 2004 was to do lots of things for myself. This year I changed jobs to one that was better for me, got divorced, moved all by myself, started an exercise program and have stuck with it, got my chronic illness under control, made lots of progress in therapy, and have regularly checked out books from the library for my personal enjoyment.

When I was choosing grad departments it came down to what I wanted written on my toetag at the morgue....yeah, yeah...kind of a bad image, but you know what I mean.
And I knew I wanted it to say "anthropologist"...
I'm already doing a couple of the things I ALWAYS wanted to do and challenged myself to do...
Going to Grad school
Exercising (Karate, weights, walking)
It makes me feel VERY alive...Life is good....
NYC is soo fun! So much to do and see. Honestly, I think I'd have to go with someone each time because it's so huge and it can be kinda dangerous. But the key is not to look like you're sight seeing. Looking up is a clear sign that you're a tourist. Also, dressing unlike the natives is a sure-fire sign. NO FANNY PACKS!
If you go alone, just stay safe. Put your purse strap diagonally across you and the purse part in front. No money in back. And all diamonds or stones in rings should be turned INTO your palms. NYC can be very safe, but you never know hwo you can run into. I enjoyed my time there. And see a show! It's worth the money!
