Dylan is going to an allergist this Wednesday so he's been taken off of his Zyrtec and his other creams for Eczema and he's just miserable. Poor baby. No anti-histamines allowed before the test. Saturday was his first official day without the meds. He didn't take anything Friday night except Singulair. Saturday he was sniffling and sneezing and his eyes were watery. He ran fever too later that day. He also ran fever of at least 102.2 Sunday and I worried. I called his pediatric nurse to see if this was normal and she said he probably was running fever and breaking out due to a lack of meds and his body was asking for them. Withdrawal. He's home today just to make sure he's fever free and so far, he is. He goes in Wednesday at 1 for his first allergy test and I hope we find out everything he's really allergic to.
Who else has had an allergy test? How did it go? I never had one, but I hear it is harsh.

Lot's of experience here, Mel.
Ty's been through the Med withdrawl. He didn't get the fever, but VERY grumpy and uncomfortable. Asthma flare-up's w/out the Zyrtec (and then no Singulair the 48 hours before hand either) and his SKIN!!!! OMG! He just practically turned pink all over. His skin was so reactive to everything he touched that wasn't his own clothing. When we were in Denver, at the specialist hospital, he had to have cloth between his arms and the leather couch in in the lounge we hung out in. The leather was supposed to be cleaned daily and made basically "hypoallergenic" which cloth you can't clean that well. But Ty just turned bright red anywhere he made contact. As SOON as he was allowed his zyrtec back, he was fine.
The allergy tests are very uncomfortable. I would imagine for a younger guy like Dylan, it will be a little worse. But the needle pick's aren't that bad. I think Ty's greater discomfort came from the allergic reactions that he had to endure for 30 minutes w/out itching them! He reacted to everything they stuck him with, just about.
If you get someone good, they jsut hit them quick with the "pricks" and then it's all over. Not as bad as getting multiple shots.
I would have some great "prize" on hand, to reward a job well done. maybe even wrap it up. Make it very appealing to help give D some incentive to be still. Because being still is going to be a big deal.
Hugs to him in advance. Allergy testing is a GREAT tool, but it's not fun initially.
His dad was allergic to everything under the sun when he was a boy and has grown out of it so we hope this will be the case for D. Our dog was either stolen or got out somehow and I have suspected all along it was this dog that caused the biggest breakouts. It was shortly after he arrived that D began itching. Of course, we've purchased a tiny puppy, a Rat Terrier that is not old enough to come home, but with the proper treatments, it's okay for us to have a pet as long as it's well maintained. Hogan was an outside dog that Shane allowed in sometimes. Bad idea. My X had pets his whole childhood with all his allergies and because he took shots, he could still have the pets. But I refuse (not only because I hate the things) to have cats because they flare up his asthma. Unfortunately, the previous owners here had two big fluffy cats and we didn't get the house ealry enough to clean thoroughly after the cats. They were in the house until the last second. But since then there is nothing left of cat. I've cleaned this house up and down for that.
I sure hope he's okay and I will definitely get him a nice something to reward him for his patience.
Thanks!
Mel

My son is allergic to peanuts.
They tested him for everything but that (the allergy to peanuts is so dangerous they can't do a skin test or oral test for it). And it went very smooth - he tested negative on everything - and the skin prick tests didn't bother him at all. The doctor and nurse were very nice - I took him to one of the best pediatric allergists here.
The only thing troublesome was the blood test we had to go for at the lab. He is very brave - but did not like that. I sat close and talked to him the whole way through.
I think that shots when they were an infant were much worse - hopefully that is an encouragement to you.
At least you will find out what is bothering him. Do you think it could be the dog? That seems to be something new?
Good luck and keep us posted!!
I think it's possible the dog could have caused some problems. He arrived on our porch the weekend we moved and Shane took him in. We took him to the vet and he got a clean bill of health, actually perfect health and we figured it was all good. But Dylan began to break out and itch all over. He got tested for Scabies because his father's house had them and he was around all those people at Christmas. He didn't have Scabies, but was treated for them anyway and he has Elidel for Eczema. I know from what the doctor says that he can still have pets even if he's allergic because the meds he's on will counteract the pets and he can be around them. But the big dog, Hogan is gone now. FOr 5 days he's been missing and we have no idea what happened. He was a stray so maybe he hated being cooped up. We just have yet to find any sign of him digging out. The little dog will be okay. At least she won't be in and out like Hogan was. I intended for him to be strictly outdoors, but Shane let him in at night and I think he brought things inside that didn't agree with D. That's my theory.

FYI: the specialists we were seeing (National Jewish Hospital in Denver. Top allergies and respiratory hosp in the country) have found that Elidel is not effective for the healing of eczema like it was hoped. It is GREAT for prevention of breakouts. Basically well before there is anything noticable on the skin surface, the problem is often already beginning. Older eczema patients can report feeling a "tingling" below the surface of the skin. Almost a "bone itch" and THAT is when you use elidel. That is when Ty uses it, with pretty good response.
But when you have a current breakout, the best possible medication is still a high strength steroid ointment (not creme base) like Triamcinolone, or similar.
Not trying
If I was you, I would clean the house extremely well, including carpet and the air ducts and filters. You might even have to eliminate carpeting in his room.
And seriously, Mel, I would NOT get a dog - especially with a baby coming along. Dogs are wonderful pets, but in my opinion, they do not mix with newborns. They bark when the baby is sleeping and they make a big mess in the house further adding to stress.
But that is just my opinion.
I wish you and Dylan well. How is your pregnancy?
D scratches at night too and I see bloody spots on his sheets. I am sure he's bad enough to need some alternative. We do have some Triamcinolone here at the house that was prescribed from his Pediatrician. It seemed to work great. You're right, the Elidel isn't the best. The breakouts he already had have stayed, but he's not gotten any more. Just the hive looking rash yesterday probably due to going off the meds. I'll email you on that wet wrap thing. Sounds like he might be as bad as or almost as bad as Ty.
You're not a know-it-all. I posted this question to get answers and you are giving them to me.
Thanks!

We're fine. I actually mopped and vacuumed all day the other day and washed all linens and vacuumed the furniture and beds. It's all done. Wiped clean. We have no carpetting at all, so we're clear on that.
As for the puppy, it's already done. She's bought, but the house is large enough where when the baby is asleep, she can be in another room where the baby cannot hear her. She's a little bitty thing and we can get her trained not to bark so much. We are going to do the whole obedience training thing with her to insure her good behavior. I'm really not too worried about it. But I appreciate the thoughts.
The pregnancy is going well. I posted pics on the Good Housekeeping boards for Sex, Marriage, and Intimacy. You should go look. I go for an ultrasound tomorrow to determine is the Marginal Previa is cleared up and I can have a better chance of delivering naturally rather than C-Section. I'm a little nervous, but okay.

Mel, somehow I missed that you had the possible complication of a partial previa. Is this what they feel the bleeding/spotting a few weeks ago was from?
I'll be praying that everything moved into proper position so you can proceed w/out worrying about csection. But I will say, I've had the C (I was TERRIFIED) and it wasn't as bad as I imagined. Still not ideal.
Keeping my fingers crossed for you. Let us know what they say.
Yeah the doctor spotted the previa in November during the sex revealing ultrasound. He said it was 95% positive that it would clear up on it's own. I am optimistic that it will/has. We'll know tomorrow and Shane will be there with me. They feel the spotting was due to just sexual intercourse and that's all. Maybe we were too rough. We kinda went all out that day being wild about it and ever since then, we've had no problems. He's being more gentle, but making sure it's still good.
I talked to a few friends too that had C's and they said it would be fine and so if I have to, oh well. I'll get thru it. I'm strong and can handle whatever in order to have a healthy, happy baby. It's nice to know there are many of you out there that have been there and can give the thumbs up that I'll be alright either way.
Thanks!
