There's no money in the budget for 6 people come fiscal year end, so as of Dec 31 I will no longer be working at my job.

Hi Alison,

I know this is troubling and unnerving for you. But yes, stay positive. I am sure that something good or better will come along.

It is good that you are at the top of the list and that they gave you so much notice.

Perhaps you can offer for them to call you on an as-needed basis? In the mean time I guess you will have to explore what is around you. Talk to companies around you. Look at the paper. Visit monster.com, etc....

Book keeping from home could be good. You would have flexibility. And diversity of income sources with a lot of clients. Maybe some accountants or businesses around you could use help on a part time basis?

If I was you, I would start a "blitz-krieg" where I explore as many options as possible and talk to as many people as possible and see what your best options are.

You have a lot of things working in your favor to get something going from home. Keep us posted.

I do wish you well - I know this is hard for a single mom. But sometimes change can be a good thing - look what you went through to get J!!

Well first I'm sending positive thoughts and energy your way that everything will turn out well. I do accounting/payroll/ benefits work and I've never been unemployed, so you have a good advantage with that. My daughter does IT and accounting work as a freelancer, she advertises on Craigs List and gets a lot of work through her ads, so it's something to keep in mind. I would take this time to update the resume, and register with all the good websites( Monster/Career Builder) that you can. Also your local Unemployment office has free access to their job database and various services to help you in your search. I would make calls and network as much as you can as well. It was very smart of you to save and prepare for the worst, hopefully you won't need it.

Alison,

I'm sorry to hear about your job situation. That was pretty decent of them to give some warning though. Many employers give no warning and just let people go unexpectedly.

There is a chance that some people will quit to leave the sinking ship and they might keep you for a bit longer after December 31st, but if I were you I would start looking for a new job right now. Reductions in force often come in waves. They let some people go and let some more people go a few weeks later. I have seen that before. Also, after the first round of cuts, morale is super low for those who have remained.

Get your resume in order and start checking the internet job listings. Post your resume and you will probably get some calls from headhunters. Check out temp agencies too. If you don't have a job come Jan. 1st, temping (after your severance pay is up) is better that the unemployment benefits. I know I couldn't pay my bills on unemployment.

You mention feeling more comfortable working underneath someone. Don't sell yourself short. Apply for any and all bookeeping jobs, even the ones that aren't entry level. You can do it.

Thanks guys, (gals?)

Yeah, I'm glad that I did get so much notice, so I have 7 weeks to look before I'm officially done.
