The dog ate my homework. My email crashed. My mother-in-law was in town. What's the best (made-up) excuse you've ever come up with to get out of something? And did it work, or did you get caught? :)
The best excuse, really, is the truth. A simple statement, "that doesn't work for me" usually works for just about everything that I don't want to do that is not in my favor. Being a single mom means I cannot make everyone happy and I am not going to try. There are a lot of times I have to say NO. This holds my sanity. And lord knows we need me to be sane and guide this ship!
I tell the truth, usually. But there have been times (rarely) when I need a mental health day from work. Since this doesn't happen often, I don't feel badly about saying "today I won't be in because I'm not feeling well." The unwell part is my brain, which has fried, and I'm sick of working with them, not physically sick, but they don't need to know that. I have also eased out of dates before, and instead of saying "gee, I simply don't want to see you" (the truth), sometimes I have said that I couldn't get a sitter or that I had to work. I just think making an excuse is nicer than telling the truth in this particular situation.

Moody, not a very creative excuse maker
