How we change

This movie probably REALLY shows my age!! But it was at one time a very favorite. Out of Africa - with Meryl Streep - I always thought she was such a talented actress with her variety of roles and elegance.
Anyway, when I first watched that movie I was in my 20s. I adored the character she played - I mean - who would not want such an adventure. And who would not relate to the dating fiascos she had in that movie.
Recently I came upon a website featuring the original author of the book and found out that the movie was actually a true story!! I was so surprised.
And then I realized I still had that vhs in my movie cabinet, and a long ride on the stationery bike....so I watched part of it again (okay - it is a 3 hour movie and my ride was not quite that long!!) LOL!!
But this time when I watched it I did not feel the same way at all about the character. I saw that she settled in her marriage to a man who obviously was NOT that into her - she only sought the adventure - and ultimately MrRightNow instead of MrRight. And really, although she had the travel to Africa and her experience there, her life had to take on many great sorrows because of being with the wrong man and the way that made her feel.

Although I didn't see that movie, I agree about how we change. Recently, I've re-watched movies that were very influential to me growing up and had a completely different perspective as an adult. Pretty neat... catching things from the movie that I didn't notice as a child.. or realizing the characters weren't as "cool" as I first thought...
For me, that happened recently with Grease... Watching it as an adult, I realized how much I idolized John Travolta and that whole love story. I really saw myself in the Sandra D role as a child. And I couldn't believe that even at a very young age, I was so infatuated with John Travolta. Funny. Now, as an adult, I'm don't see high-school/dating with such "fairytale" eyes.
