We open all our presents Xmas Eve and we do it very traditional German. The whole town is filled with the sound of bells and singing throughout and we wait for that sign and then we sing along outside and head towards mass. Afterwards, we go home to warm up with hot wine or apple cider and listen to christmas music and a storie. The girls both have to memorize one song or one christmas poem. Then we open our presents, but this takes a while. Not because we have so much, but because we take time to look at it or read it, or whatever. Then we have dinner and friends come over for something to drink. Thats Christmas for us every year, since childhood. I love it.
What xmas was the best and why? The worst and why?
The year Scott proposed. I have the worst christmas stories, so their isn't just one, but I'll make the list real quick: My father walked out on us Christmas Day, My XH walked out on me Christmas Day, My XBoyfriend walked out on me Christmas Day last year. It seems, because they know the storie of my Dad when I was a child, they felt they had to punish me the exact way. This year, no man, no walking out. LOL
What did you ask for christmas? (sorry, this must be materialistic)
I asked for money to go to Scottland on a weekend trip with my girlfriends(6 of us)in February for 4 days.
Do you do any volunteer work or make any donation to a certain group? Which one?
I donate and volunteer every year. Usually for single mothers with children. This year, I decided to make a slight change. I will be donating books, clothes, etc to the orphanage in my town and as a present offer them to teach the children english for free for one year.
When do you put your tree up? 5 days before Christmas
Have you finished all your xmas shopping? Almost, but not quite. I have the main stuff, but still have to finish getting some additional computer stuff for alex. One or two more things for Nina and for my Mom. Plus stocking stuffers.
Wow:

That sounds so romantic!! What happened to Alex? IF you don't mind me asking??
BTW - I just had to ask - do you get to eat Stollen when in Germany? It is one of my favorite confections and very hard to find here in the states!! Also, you are lucky that Germany has so many beautiful hand-carved Xmas ornaments - I love the nutcrackers and those neat pyramids that go around with candles. Enjoy this one!!!!! Send us some pix of the villages and the stores - I would love to see that. (I was in Munich once.)
What was the best christmas present you ever got?
Hard to say. It would have to be just whenever I had my heart set on something and got it.
What was the worst present?
You know, I've gotten so many stupid things for gifts that I never used.
What is the big present for your kids this year for xmas?
I'm not putting this in stone, but Shane and I have talked about getting a puppy and we really looked into it the other night online. But that may happen after Christmas. I think D is just getting a bunch of small things this year.
Do you buy for all family members or only immediate family?
Just us. We'd love to buy for everyone, but the family is just too big.
Do you have a certain Xmas tradition? Or one as a child? If yes, what?
As a child, we used to get up and open gifts with Christmas music playing, eat breakfast, and get dressed to go to Aunt Marilyn's to give the fudge mom made and gifts to Grandma. Then we'd go around to other aunt and uncle's houses with fudge and then go to my Gran's to have a HUGE feast after we opened gifts there. We'd graze on the food all day and she'd make traditional things plus her signature cajun specialties, including gumbo. As for now, Shane and I have no traditions, but we will make our own.
What xmas was the best and why? The worst and why?
THe best was my third grade year. We were living at my Gran's and that year I got so many Barbie's and cool things. I remember opening gifts for such a long time. The worst was the year I was pregnant with Dylan. Scott and I were so broke and we went home to Texas for the holidays. Gran went to the ER because she was bleeding and found out she had fibroids, which opened up the can of worms for her cancer she died of just over a year later, and we couldn't afford any gifts. I bought Scott a shirt and two pairs of jeans, he bough me some maternity clothes and none of it was a surprise. I made photo albums for each mother with ultrasound pics of D for like 10 bucks a piece and that was Christmas.
What did you ask for christmas? (sorry, this must be materialistic)
I really want some Burberry Perfume. It's my favorite.
Do you do any volunteer work or make any donation to a certain group? Which one?
I'd love to. And when I have some money, I will donate to Toys for Tots and Coats for Kids. Last year, Shane got an angel off the angel tree and we did buy a little girl some clothes and a few toys. It was up to me to go pick it all out and he was really proud of me for doing that.
When do you put your tree up?
Normally earlier in December, but this year it will be later due to the move. Plus it's in storage.
Have you finished all your xmas shopping?
Not even began....

What do you mean what happened to Alex? My daughter? She's on my website. The beautiful Angel I dress her up to be every year. She hates it, but I tell her she's my christmas angel and 11yrs later she's still wearing some angel outfit I make her. LOL
Yes, that's a perfect Idea I never thought of. I'll take pictures of the gorgeous christmas markets here. I love that here. IT's sooo beautiful.
What was the best christmas present you ever got? ~~~ The year I turned 10, my dad got an ATV (3 wheeler) wrestled into the kitchen for us kids on Christmas morning. We got up and went in there and here was this huge thing sitting there like one of those car commercials. It was SOOOO exciting!!!! Dad is always good at stuff like that...
What was the worst present? ~~~ There were many many from my maternal grandmother. And the thing that was wrong with them was that they were VERY used. She garage saled all summer, wrapped this crap up and we kids were SOOO uncomfortable with pretending to like them. My mom was embarrassed and tried to get her to stop giving us Christmas gifts altogether, claiming we didn't need more stuff. It was a relief when we got older and gift exchanges stopped. Ugh.
What is the big present for your kids this year for xmas? ~~~ Ty's getting a Game Boy Advance SP with a couple of games. He didn't even ask for one. Probably never occured to him to even THINK he could get something like that. He never asks for "big ticket" items.
Do you buy for all family members or only immediate family? ~~~ On my side, yes. On J's side no. And as much as I do love to, I wish I didn't because it's so EXPENSIVE!!!
Do you have a certain Xmas tradition? Or one as a child? If yes, what? ~~~ Many! Baking a Birthday Cake for Jesus, Having CMas eve service and then going home (I still go to mom and dads for this) to cheese ball and crackers and egg nog (for everyone but me. ICK) and busing out the homemade goodies. Usually opening ONE gift that night. Stockings ALWAYS when I was a kid and they always had a few nuts (in the shells) and a piece of fruit that we all thought was dumb, because there was a HUGE fruit bowl and nut bowl sitting out all the way through the season. LOL. We never ate them, but if they weren't there that'd be TERRIBLE! Something would seem wrong.
Working on new family traditions still...
What xmas was the best and why? The worst and why? ~~~ The best? Gosh, all of them are special for one reason or another. One that really stands out to me (and all of my sibs agree on this one) is the year that we were dirt poor. Couldn't afford a tree. So mom and dad actually decorated a tall table and put the gifts (slim though they were) on top and around. And we kids just thought it was SO COOL! Our gifts were not overly impressive, but I can still remember some of the things I got that long ago Christmas. The rest tend to blend together.
No - I meant Alex's father!! That was a cool story.
I can't wait for your pix!!
Mel, a puppy???!!!?? Do you have any idea how much work raising a puppy is? Just wanted to throw that in there, since you ARE about to have a baby.
Don't get me wrong, puppies are wonderful, adorable, lovable, sweet and cuddly creatures...but they are also needy, messy, rambunctious, curious and prone to disasters.
Much like a baby...do you really want both at the same time?
Just giving you a word of caution because I KNOW, I raised a puppy two years ago and I'm still getting over it!
Enjoy Christmas!
I doubt we'll do it right away. Just a thought about getting one sometime. It won't be for Christmas. Yeah, I've had two puppies at once before and I know first hand how needy they are. I guess I figured if I do it, we might as well get it before the baby is born or soon after so I can train it while she sleeps and since she will sleep alot, I can have time to do what I gotta do taking it outside, showing it the doggie door, and other stuff. I know once she crawls, there is no way I can train a puppy. I'll be chasing Emily all over and neglecting the puppy. We'll see and we'll do it when it's right for us. Not any time sooner.
